Selling: Home-Cooked Dishes, Preserves

Philippa James has always been enthusiastic about cooking. Even as a child she experimented with some early ‘Vicar of Dibley’ style experimental sessions in the family kitchen! She has recently opened a cookery school where she works with clients to tailor-make cookery courses around their individual requirements. She can accommodate 4 to 6 people at a time and can demonstrate a wide range of cookery skills, from complete beginners, to accomplished cooks. Philippa also sells a large variety of her own produce at farmers’ markets including a range of home made preserves in a number of varieties, including Damson & Port, Strawberry & Cointreau and Raspberry & Champagne. She also produces her own Mackerel Paté with home-grown horseradish and vodka. The photographs include a picture of children at a local school where Philippa has been running a cookery course for mothers. On the final week of the course, the children came along try the food that their mothers had prepared. The picture shows the children enjoying 'seconds' of Philippa's chocolate sponge pudding and minty 'Shrek' custard. She is keen to show food lovers how to make wholesome dishes from locally sourced ingredients within minutes!

"Philippa has come a long way since making making potato 'faces' for local village fetes. Chocolate Crispy Cakes and Jelly with her Granny in Somerset, her first badge (Hostess!) at Brownies, and her other Granny's Lemonade Cordial quickly followed and became family favourites. Unlike her first attempts at Shortbread, {'Leadbread!'} which were consigned to the lawn, and half the birds in Lancashire were grounded for at least a week!"Good luck", with everything, now, and in the future...A very proud Mum."(And first time internet user!)

I met Philippa doing a dem at Lakeside Village - very lively, very entertaining and very good food. The chocolate bread went down especially well with Katie (aged 2), and I'm looking forward to visiting the cookery school. Surely she can't have that much energy ALL day....?

Philippa is passionate to show the world how quick and easy it can be to make nutritious, healthy meals for the family without resorting to processed 'ready meals.' Just watch her demos - very entertaining - but with a very clear message. She is also very perseptive to dietry requirements and can accommodate them all. One of her treat foods - Chocolate Pudding - is to die for. Blanhel

I have tried philippas reindeer poo chutney and found it to be extremely good with a selection of cheeses especially with the mirabo walnut ,as the dates compliment the walnut very well. it is no surprise that with philippas friendly and bubbly character that she came up with this novel recipe.

Phillipa is one of the most enthusiastic and dedicated food personalities I have ever come across, as well as having her own fine range of products and services she also spends much of her time helping other producers and educating the public about quality and local food, she truly is a local food hero !!

me and my brother and sister went to one of philippa's cookery classes for kids and made some cool drop scones with white chocolate buttons. They were lush! Also at christmas time we made a cute little ginger bread house with some drippy icing on the roof and smarties around the pathway.I think philippa should win because she is ace and a fabulous cook!

Phillipa's food is great. We sampled some of her delicious food at Harewood House in November, she obviously puts a lot of effort and time in to creating her dishes. We loved her Pork Royale and her Tiramisu is to die for. Phillipa is so enthusiastic in what she does and gives 200% to what she does

Philippa's chutney is so good I could eat a jar of it at one sitting. Her stall is my first place to visit when I visit the farmer's market at Cedar Farm Mawdesley. She always has a cheery word and a smile for her customers.

For the few in the UK who haven’t heard the story… ‘Philippa’s …fine foods’ started as a hobby to get my husband out! My husband, Kevin, was very poorly; he spent 2 months in hospital, and was on the hospital trolley for theatre when staff decided not to amputate his leg. He returned home for 6 months bed-rest, and then slowly recuperated enough to start making small trips out, using a wheelchair. After Kevin’s Mum died, we sold her bits and bobs at a car-boot sale, I took a few home made cakes to boost the takings; a farmer’s wife bought some cake, and said it was the best she’d had since her Mum’s, and she asked if I did the farmers’ markets, which I didn’t! Some time later, we started to do one farmers’ market a month, then two, now three. Last year I started to do cookery demonstrations at fine food shows, and I identified a need for a Cookery School in the Lancashire area; this has just opened, after a series of technical hitches! I have just received 2 x silver, and 1 x bronze in The Great Taste Awards 2006! BBC Radio Lancashire have recently asked me to provide recipes for their new Supper Club, which has given me another opportunity to shout about getting back to home cooking, and involving kids in the kitchen! I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful support, and encouragement; many people know how hard the last few years have been, and I couldn’t have done any of this without the help that I have received. 'Made in Lancashire', for absolutely all they have done for me, local demo' chefs and producers, who have become firm friends, customers helping to lug boxes of cakes, soups etc, from the car, the hugs from fellow producers (And customers!)on the bad days, the laughter on the good days, (And there has been plenty of this, usually at me!) I am totally passionate about food, and particularly this wonderful region that we are plonked in! Many of those nominated deserve to be uktv Local Food Heroes; the work that many of the producers put in, and the hours and dedication to their craft is something which most customers never see, and it is this which provides us with such a cornucopia of fabulous North West produce! Good luck, everybody! Have a look at the hilarious comments about me, and remember, voting closes on the 21st August! Every vote counts! {Thank you!} Philippa :0)

On a recent visit to Lancashire I was delighted to come across Phillipa's fine foods at a farmers market. yes the lady is most definately several platters short of a buffet, but her enthusiasm and passion was most refreshing. I found the cakes I bought to be delicious and excellent value for money. high praise from a dedicated cook. Well done Phillipa - wishing you continued success.

Philippa is without a doubt the sexiest cook in Lancashire at the moment. Also, of course, the most culinarily accomplished, the maddest (by several boxes of frogs) and the most fun, but what the hell - lets concentrate on the important stuff and get the male vote going here. Chaps, introduce yoursleves, taste her food and drool ! Ian

As a complete novice in the kitchen I contacted Philippa in desperation as summer approached as I could not face the same bland food I prepare over and over again for summer entertaining. I headed off to Philippas cookery course for summer entertaining, we were all made to feel really comfortable and no question was too silly! with Philippas none stop banter the evening was very good fun. Since then we have entertained on numerous occasions and they think I have bought the food in. I would highly recommend anybody to go one of Philippas courses no matter what standard of cook you are. Thank you very much Philippa I have been inspired!! Wishing you every success.

Where do you start with someone like Philippa!!! Its just fantastic to find someone who is so enthusiastic and passionate about food. I could find other words to describer her as well some of them being... fun loving, creative, energetic, enduring and last but not least as mad as a box of frogs!!!!! Her recently opened cookery school was attended by my wife recently and it has transformed my life. I now come home from work to wonderful dishes prepared for me by my wife through Philippas school. And whats more all the ingredients in Philippas recipies are normal every day stuff you have in your cupboards at home. I must say that the cookery school is an absolute must for beginers and experianced chefs alike, its fantastic for us menfolk with wives who can cook somthing marvelous.. I might even go on the course myself. Keep it up Phillipa you making the men of this great nation very happy.. I still havent mentioned Philippas wonderful cakes. I'll not rattle on all i'll say is go do the cookery course, buy the cakes and make your own mind up. I know you will not be disapointed. Visit www.philippas.co.uk for more infor on cook school, its ACE. Please vote for Phillipa she really deserves all the success in the world. Good Luck Phillipa!!!!!!

Philippa recently provided the food for a family party and it made the occasion. The care and attention she put into the dishes was evident in every bite. Her food is delicious, thoroughly filling and best of all made with obvious enthusiasm on her part. Vote Philippa!

I had the pleasure of sampling Philippa's food for the first time when she provided the catering for my mother's birthday in Somerset. I had heard about the care, finesse, love and man-hours that go into Philippa's Fine Foods, but I wasn't prepared for this! Fine fair indeed, it’s not easy picking a favourite dish, but if I had to it have would be Philippa's Red Onion and Lancashire cheese flan. Words alone cannot describe it, but I'll have a stab... Wow! sublime, heavenly, to die for, but more simply, just scrumptious! Philippa's recipe was so clear and easy to follow that even I couldn’t mess it up, and now my friends here in London are clambering for the recipe. I haven’t seen Philippa demonstrate at her cookery school, but I can imagine it being whirlwind of energy so a word to the wise… Jamie, Nigel, Anthony, Nigella and Gary, you should all be looking over your shoulders. There's a new girl in town and her name is Philippa James.

Whatmore can be said about this incredible human dynamo? How many others spend almost all of the 24 hours in a day enthusing, thinking, talking, preparing, selling, and occasionally eating her home made products? Often to be found at 3 or 4 in the morning baking or bottling for her farmers market stalls, she manages also to fit in cookery demonstrations, sourcing local products which she cannot grow herself, and as if this weren't enough, she has now opened a cookery school in deepest Lancashire. If this latest venture is as successful as her frequently sold out food stalls we should soon be hearing more about this over-exuberant character. Wishing you every success Philippa.

Unique, absolutely a one off! Combine infectious enthusiasm for good, local, home produced food with a rare and blossoming talent. Whisk in a heart of gold with a deep knowledge of her craft. Pop in a bit of craziness and a dash of hyperactivity and serve garnished with a fabulous sense of humour. UKTV - if your A&R people haven't checked out this lady as a suitable candidate for a successful TV series - do it now before you miss out! Best of luck Philippa!

The hours that she puts in and the enthusiasm she has for everything she does are both endless. How can one person have soooo much energy, her fingers in so many pies (not literally, but all food related!)and still find time to feed the needy?!! (The latter being my four "littlies"/children, who quite often get the pleasurable job of sampling Philippas delicious wares!)Having tried Philippas scrummy, varied dishes for the past nine or so years, we can wholeheartedly recommend that everyone should try them! Warning.....be prepared to put on a stone or so because you just want more!!!! Keep up the good work Philippa, and I don't care what they say, you do have a face for television, not just radio!

Mad crazy or a "hyper-active rocket on bonfire night" describe philippa. I have seen her demonstrate and also seen her behind the scenes, both helping out at markets or shows and also watching her work madly to get things done on time. I dont know how she does it but somehow philippa seems to have 30 hours in a day with everything she does. I have been recruited to help at great eccleston show and have booked in at the psychiatrists for later. I have to be as mad as her. But this is what happens when you spend so much time as a toddler with an insane auntie you end up like her. But anyway best of luck Auntie Philippa.

alicewotsit alicewotsit Posted 13 Jul 2006 1:59 PM

Philippa makes everything for the farmers market herself using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, no artificial flavourings or additves are used, but beware, philippas passion and enthusiasm for food is infectious, and, like her produce, addictive! Her quest to spread the word about good food has led to her opening the cookery school, with just four to six people on any course the tips and wrinkles of how to produce high quality acheivable meals are in abundance. Philippa puts a lot of effort into championing local producers and can be seen at various shows in her bespoke kitchen, demonstrating quick and easy recipes using local produce. BEWARE, described in the Lancashire Pennine Food Festival brochure for this September as 'a hyperactive-rocket on bonfire night' and 'the rocket-fuelled Philippa James', perhaps she should come with a government health warning! I know all this from first hand experience because I am the unpaid staff who was brave/daft enough to marry her!

Philippa is absolutely dedicated to her business. Inventive, forward thinking, doing demonstrations for children and adults who want to explore cookery further, and her food is fabulous. One up for locally produced, handmade, REAL, food.

Having lived in lancashire for 10 years my partner and I decided to moved to derbyshire to fulfill our dream of converting a barn,
however, after the project we will be returning to Lancashire where we have two hairdressing salons, which is where I first met Philippa. She came into the salon by chance hoping that I could tame her unruley locks. She was delighted and we struck up an instant friendship and a common interest in food. Philippa loves to cook it and I love to eat it!!!!!! The next day she very kindly sent some of her fine foods as a thank you. I have only known Philippa for one year and with in that time she hasn't ceased to amaze me with her genuine commitment and passion for locally sourced produce for her culinary delights.
Philippa began to produce fantastic foods which includes one of my favorites, smocked mackeral with homegrown horse raddish and vodka which has won her the North West fine foods producer of the year award.
When her husband took ill, She decided to start the business to give him an interest. Her infant business took off at once and now she participates in three farmers markets and has won two prestigious awards.
Philippa opened her cookery school about 3 months ago with so much energy and passion she deserves to succeed. We believe along with hundreds more in the north west that Philippa should be nominated for our north west region of the food heroes. She is fantastic and her foods are out of this world!!!!
