Like most people we simply came upon this wonderful place by chance and only failed to eat there when there was simply no space to squeeze onto the large table where John and his team would press all sorts of ideas of what to eat on us. We have been out of the UK for a year now but will be heading back to sample John's Mousaka, game pie... I feel I need to diet already!
I only discovered this great deli about a year ago, but it has become a regular trip for me. The food is fantastic and the service always really friendly. Particular favourites are the hand carved Serrano ham, the dried pastas which my sons adore, and selecting a bottle from the unusual and always delicious wines.
I have visited this shop on numerous occasions and am always amazed at the vast range of speciality foods and wine on offer. I can highly recommend the chocolate brownies - absolutely delicious!!
I visited Hornet Provisions for breakfast for the first time on my birthday and I have to say it was the highlight of my day! From the moment we sat down John made us feel very welcome, infact it was just like eating in someone’s home. The portions were HUGE! I had the homemade muesli and my partner the farmhouse breakfast and it was the best breakfast we have ever had. The surroundings are fantastic, there was an unlimited supply of cookbooks and John chatted away about the different regions of Italy that he likes to get his food from. The price of the food is very reasonable for what you get and we finished the morning with a carton of biscotti to take away. To my surprise John had left me a bar of dark chocolate by the till as a birthday present, which was a lovely touch. Hornet Provisions has something for everyone whether it’s a delicious meal you're after or special jars of something for the larder, a visit to this shop is definitely not to be missed!
Hornet Provisions offers excellent service alongside the most amazing food in the local area, with a choice of meats, olives, cheeses, amongst many other delicatessen foods not available to the same high standard that can be found in the Hornet. The store nto only offers its customers fantastic food to purchase for consumption at home, but also with the pstairs cafe, there is a fine selection of cakes that perfectly accompany properly filtered coffee and brewed tea. An exceptional store, which can not be rivalled.
Fantastic cheeses not found elsewhere locally, great organic stuff- muesli, bread, biscuits, chocolates, wine, eggs. Super chutneys and pickles, from around the country and Europe. The best thing is that they are so friendly, helpful and put everything in personalised brown recylable bags with a gorgeous honey blue sticker! I love them!
Fantastic food made with fine local produce. Very reasonably priced - portion sizes are not small!! A wonderful place to relax, chat to friends and enjoy delicious food.
The Hornet Provisions, started by graphic designer John Clint and his family in 2004, is a real Aladdin's Cave of locally sourced produce that includes cheeses, breads, meats and fresh meat, fish and vegetables for the deli's superb upstairs cafe, John also sourcing many Italian cheeses, salamis, pastas, wines and olive oils, his quest for the best resulting in one of the best delicatessens in the southeast, knocking the spots off his competitors who generally go down the safe route of bottled chutneys and jams. Not John and his team. They are all fine cooks and make dishes for the deli, the cafe a haven for those who appreciate Italian food in delightful surroundings, the kitchen on view with plenty of cookbooks to browse through when waiting for one of the many home-made dishes.
The French and Italians in particular have a generosity of spirt and knowledge when it comes to food. John is clearly of the same ilk. Just go to find out what all the fuss is about. OK, you may need your card rather than a quid or two, but, like the cosmetic ad, you know you're worth it.
