Samphire

2006 Regional Finalist

Selling: Bread / Bakery, Cheese / Dairy, Fish & Shellfish, Home-Cooked Dishes, Meats, Poultry, Fruit & Veg

Run with passion by Karen Nethercott, Samphire is a food shop with a difference. Everything sold here comes from small-scale local producers, meat is rare breed and all poultry and pork come from livestock reared outdoors. In addition, bread is baked every day by North Elmham Bakery, the milk comes from a dairy down the road and seasonal fruit and vegetables are sourced from local growers. Whatever you do, don't miss the legendary pork pies - Times restaurant critic, Giles Coren describes them as the best that he has ever tasted.

The pork pies (especially when warm) and sausages are wonderful.

My daughter recommeded Samphire to us and I was very pleased that she did. It is rare to find a shop so devoted to high principles. No wonder it has won so many awards for high animal welfare standards. Of course the proof as they say is in the eating and I was delighted to find that there was proof a plenty - high quality and very tasty food.

It's a relief to know that when I'm really busy and other quality shops have closed, Samphire is still open, to buy ALL my Sunday lunch ingredients!

Susi1 Susi1 Posted 20 Jun 2007 8:05 PM

Excellent quality food. Meat especially good, as can guarantee it all comes from happily reared animals. Tiffin and bread absolutely fantastic.

Kirstylouise Kirstylouise Posted 20 Jun 2007 5:44 PM

I try to get all my meat from here as I can guarantee its provenance and the quality and range beat any other outlet. The tiffin should be available on prescription. This chocolate prozac has helped me out in many a dark hour. The bread is superb and the tasty bags of salad from Rabbit patch are great value, last all week and are not pillow packed. Running out of space but must mention Cley smokehouse mackerel and the steak and ale pie would get my vote for last supper!

SAMPHIRE SAVED MY LIFE - well improved it a lot at least. I look back on the days before Samphire arrived as the dark ages - of limp unorganic supermarket fodder I would now hesitate to put on my compost heap. Karen has elevated our existence here - she isn't a mere food hero - she is a FOOD DEITY

Local produce, local people a great combination for any business. Karen, Jeff best of look we know what a great care and love goes into everything you produce, nowhere does livestock have a better life, keep up the excellent work you are already doing.

Never sampled any of the delights from the shop as I live on the other side of the world!! However, Karen and Jeff are my Aunt and Uncle so I have sampled their food many times before and I am quite sure it is still as wonderful!! Good luck to you both.

I'm so lucky that Samphire is my local shop. It makes food shopping a delight rather than a chore. I've never tasted such fantastic meat and the ready meals are great for when I don't have much time.

Lovely, lovely pork pies. The chocolate brownies are fab too! Lovely staff.

We discovered Samphire whilst on holiday in Norfolk shortly after they opened. What a fantastic concept and how passionate the owners are. We were really pleased on our return earlier this year to see not only are they still there but how well its all going. We weren't really surprised because everything is so wonderful - especially the sausages and pork pies !

Karen & Jeff run a great food shop selling fantastic quality, tasty, local food. We are lucky enough that Samphire is our local shop and I love to be able to pop in and buy something for my toddlers tea, confident that it is fresh and seasonal (Try the homemade mini pizzas, perfect for a toddler treat with no nasty additives). The meat is consistently fantastic and don't miss the pork pies - they really are as good as they claim.

Karen and Jeff are real local food heroes. They are passionate about local food, their animals and their customers. When they say local food they really mean LOCAL food.

This place is really special. Try the sausages from 'happy pigs', no wonder Gary Rhodes said they were the best ever !

I am a catering manager at a local school, and I value local produce, food which has not travelled very far, and rare breeds. I also like to support local businesses, and I promote the likes of Samphire at The Paston Foodies Group which was started by my niece Sharon Murphy and myself, and has grown somewhat. Come and visit us on the last Wednesday of every month at The Paston Village Hall.

Karen is a lovely lady, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. It's a pleasure to shop there and worth the extended journey. The food is superb - I have had fine bacon, pork, lamb, bread, sausages and pies (oh my, the pies.....).

crabbydog crabbydog Posted 14 May 2007 8:15 PM

I can't praise the staff enough, they are always so friendly and welcoming. They are also really knowledgeable about the products and where they come from. At a time when many other retailers are climbing on the'local food' bandwagon by stocking a few local products, Samphire stands out as the only one putting ALL its energies into promoting wonderful local produce. Long live Samphire !

Too expensive for locals. OK for the visitors.

Unlike many so called'farm'shops Samphire is neat, clean & stylish. The staff are also intelligent & understand the goods on display.

The food and service really match the stunning location.....always a special place to shop as its principles make it stand alone.

Kitten 1 Kitten 1 Posted 07 Jul 2006 11:10 AM

It is friendly, produce is always fresh and locally sourced and flavour is outstanding. The shop has a diverse range of fayre, which changes with the seasons, and it is all presented in a no nonsense yet attractive way. Eg the use plain brown paper bags and cardboard boxes as packaging - all low volume and easily to recycle. You really are made to feel part of the community with many of the suppliers identified by their first names - ie Venison from James at Gunton. The pies and cakes are just to die for!

Samphire Samphire Posted 06 Jul 2006 6:35 PM

I only wanted to buy excellent quality food produced locally by people who care for animals and the importance of traceability as much as I do. Samphire meets all my aspirations which is why I not only shop there but work there as well!
