Helmsley Walled Garden

2006 Regional Finalist
Farm shop

Selling: Fruit & Veg

An 18th century walled garden in the grounds of Duncombe Park was left sadly abandoned and derelict for 20 years until in 1994 a restoration programme, instigated by Alison Ticehurst and a team of local volunteers brought the garden back to glorious life. Today it produces a vast range of fare, more than 52 varieties of apple and 40 different vines alone. Behind all this is the laudable aim to provide 'horticultural therapy and a tranquil, healing environment.' Many of the staff and volunteers suffer physical or mental illness, but all work together in a caring nurturing environment. A vegetarian café serving interesting salads, a gift shop, a plant market and surplus produce stall. Open every day April-October/November-March Fri/Sat/Sun afternoons only.

One of the highlights of my visit to Yorkshire! The garden is delightful, definitely in the "not to be missed" category, if you're in Yorkshire. The cafe provided one of the best veggie (or otherwise, come to that)lunches I've had, the salads were a delight - fresh, interesting and very, very tasty, and the chard & egg tart I had was delicious. Staff were friendly and helpful, adn I had a thoroughly enjoyable visit.

Yummy veggie food that's delicious for omnivores too. Freshly picked salads from their lovely walled garden. Visit this too in picturesque Helmsley. Delightful service. Supports ethical causes. Delicious! I thoroughly recommend it!

The walled garden at Helmsley is one of my favourite places, and watching it grow over the years has been a real pleasure. The garden has become the perfect place for a relaxed day out with its wonderful orchid house, croquet lawn and gourmet vegetarian cafe. The cafe is run by a lovely team of ladies who offer tea and sympathy, and delicious salads and cakes! I advise any one to visit this very special place if they are in Yorkshire, and enjoy some divine chocolate cake on the lawn!
