Fortunes

2008 Regional Finalist
Fishmonger

Selling: Fish & Shellfish

Park on the clifftop at Whitby Abbey, then take the 199 steps down to Henrietta Street and pitch up at the extraordinary, evocative ramshackle hut that is Fortune's evocative kipper smokery. Decades of smoking over oak shavings has left the shed blacker and thicker than tar. The kippers are sold in pairs and wrapped in newspaper, an unmissable Whitby institution.

Mr. Fortune's kipper pate tastes superb and is very popular; we had to go back to the shop three times to buy some as he sells out fast!

Whitby is quite rightly famous for several things - Fortunes kippers is one of them - long may they continue to provide this delicious product

I live in South Wales but am originally from Durham City and still have a sisiter who lives there and whenever we visit we always come here and take a large order back with us to South Wales. The best ever kippers and wrapped in newspaper just like in my childhood. Keep it going

As a Whitby resident I am lucky enough to be able to buy Fortune's Kippers on a regular basis. They are always wonderful.

If your only experience of kippers has been artificial, dyed and flavoured supermarket imitations, get yourself to Whitby, seek out Fortunes and prepare yourself for a flavour revelation. Smokey, soft and utterly irresistable, how kippers were, should be and (I hope) always will be.

The food of course, and the aromatic scent of smoke which greets you way before you get to the actual shack.

We visit Whitby quite often and we always call at Fortunes for several pairs of kippers on the morning before we leave. Fortunes kippers are the best that I have ever tasted and I will only eat the best!

Whitby is an extraordinary coastal town with its cobbled narrow streets and the constant call of seagulls, it seems only right and proper that Fortune's be here. It is unique, from a bygone age that must never fade, and the kippers are sublime.

A place where time stands still-I hope it never changes. The most wonderful kippers ever tasted. You walk the steep hill & buy them for friends & family.Drink in the atmosphere then take your kippers home and savour their smokiness.
