Churchmouse Cheeses

2007 Regional Winner
Cheesemonger

Selling: Cheese / Dairy

Prior to opening their shop in 2002, relative newcomers John and Julie Natlacen spent time scouring the county for interesting cheesemakers, and it shows. Their enthusiasm for the region's finest foods is so infectious, you're unlikely to leave without a supply to take home. The Cumbrian cheeses from Thornby Moor Dairy speak for themselves, as does the delicious Curthwaite goat's curd.

Farmer 2nd July 2007 The best range of blue cheese and the finest white Stilton and Lancahire we have ever come across! The postal service is excellent and when we visit the shop the staff are always knowledgable and friendly. Keep up the good work!

We contacted Churchmouse Cheeses via their website and John made up a Cheese Wedding Cake for us for our daughter's wedding earlier this month. The cheeses were delicious, and the cake was very impressive. We've also called in a couple of times as we drove from / to London to / from Cumbria and bought some cheeses which were exceptionally good.

The most amazing shop with a wonderful atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff and a piano player! There is no place better to taste and buy great regional cheeses and to select from a wonderful range of oils and deli produce. John and Jules run the best shop ever and deserve to win.

A really special shop - the piano playing, the quality and range of the cheeses, all the extra deli items and last but without doubt not least, the staff - a little bit of heaven in Kirkby Lonsdale!!

As far as I know this is the only shop from which I can obtain Creamy Lancashire, to my mind the finest cheese in the world.

I tend to use Churchmouse Cheeses when ordering cheese for special occasions like Christmas. The staff at the end of the 'phone are knowledegable, polite and very friendly and the orders are delivered on time and well-packed. Needless to say the products themselves are always absolutely delicious (cheeses & accompaniments).

A diamond of a shop. The staff obviously love their cheeses and are happy to tell all about where they come from. I challenge anyone to walk out without buying something!

Discovered the shop by accident, but the atmosphere is amazing. The choice of produce, quality and friendless of the staff is second to none. I have also used the Internet to order cheese and the service has been first class and the cheese arrived chilled and very well rapid. The best cheese shop around.

We undertake a four hour round trip to buy our cheese, olives and olive oil at Churchmouse Cheeses because we get a great welcome and a great choice. If we can't manage the journey, the mail order service has the personal touch of a phone call to check the order and have a chat.

Aladdin's Cave of deli food - could spend ages in there just looking at the different preserves, foodstuffs, displays, etc available - the best stuffed olives and peppers/chillis. Never go home without a bag of goodies for tea!

Churchmouse Cheeses should win local food heroes for the name alone. Exceptional food, wonderful service and friendly knowledgeable staff. Visting the shop as I do on a regular basis is a real pleasure. Long live Churchmouse Cheeses. Thank you John and Jules.

Excellent in all respects. John is passionate about his cheese, and all the staff are great. This must also be the only cheesemongers in the world with a resident pianist.

never in my waking life have i seen such an astonishing outlet. an outstanding selection of high quality cheeses, chutenys & jams, buscuits & cakes, home made dehli items & meats. the owners are commited to selling local produce and have even met alot of their supliers. this shows how passionate John & Jules are about their business, which is why its such a success. but also the small quirky touches such as the extremly talented pienists at weekends, or the creative displays. but to me the reason the business has boomed is due to the kind heated, generous and also professional owners, who dedicate their life to the shop and really care about what they do. this is what makes churchmouse cheeses one of the most individual & enjoyable places to shop in the north west.

Found quite by accident. I now travel some 150 miles to visit as often as possible. Fabulous cheeses & more, value for money, friendly & helpful staff, live piano accompaniment, website if I can't make it and to top it all John & Julie support and promote Kirby Lonsdale which is the most unspoilt town/village I have been to in years.

By mistake I gave the wrong postcode and the first parcel went astray. John & Jules were wonderfully helpful over the phone and even sent me a replacement order free of charge. The cheese is beautifully wrapped too!

Lou 23 Lou 23 Posted 02 Aug 2006 2:24 PM

Bought cheeses both from the shop and via the internet and the service and product knowledge is second to none. They even ring to check the internet order. It's worth the 120 mile round trip to Kirby Lonsdale just to visit the shop for both cheese and deli goods.

Live over 50 miles away but it's the only place to go when I need cheese for a dinner party. Great selection and friendly staff. Shopping like it should be. Their Lancashire Bomb is a great conversation piece. Highly recommended.

the owners of this establishment go out of their way to look after their customers and with the enthusiasm they emit it is a pleasure to shop and visit Kirby. we travel from East Lancashire to visit the shop and always come away with more than we expected in value and in quality.

I would consider moving to Kirby Lonsdale if only to have a local shop like Church Mouse Cheeses. The shop is wonderful, and so are the staff. I have also ordered produce over the Internet for myself and guests, which has gone down a storm. Well Done John and Julie.

Patty 7 Patty 7 Posted 01 Aug 2006 2:21 PM

I have only been able to use Churchmouse Cheeses via the internet or telephone ordering service so far and cannot fault the service and prompt attention I have received. The cheese arrives beautifully packaged and cool even in the middle of summer and is in perfect condition. I have also received handy hints on storage (as I tend to buy in bulk!) and I feel that it is good value for money. I have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone.

"Let's have a piece of the Crumbly Lancashire. And, Joe, please play 'The way we were' just one more time." Well, I have never found any other place where you can taste and buy great cheese, handmade butter, delicious quiches, and... and... AND listen to these beautiful piano tunes. The service is immaculate, the cheese and all the other treats are fabulous - all that accompanied by the nostalgic tunes that Joe plays on his piano - that's my favourite holiday treasure. I miss it already - and will be back next year! Eva-M, Duesseldorf/ Germany

What a treasure of a shop!!! In a gorgeous setting it invites you in by the sights and sounds on offer. There is even a piano player to soothe the weary shopper!! The staff are all really friendly and helpful. As for the produce I have never seen such a vast choice - cheeses, pastas, olives, preserves, olive oils, salads etc. and the quality is excellent too. It is good value for money.

I LOVE CHURCHMOUSE CHEESE! Beautiful shop, with stacks of interesting cheeses and associated goodies, run by a friendly team with enthusiasm and specialism for local and UK produce. If you want something special, John will always oblige and is a font of knowledge on food provenance. Ever since we 'found' them last year, we mail order all our cheese from Churchmouse (it all arrives exquisitely packed too). A real 'find'.

As you immediately open the door, you are surrounded by the most incredible smells, colours and choices of not just some spectacular cheeses but a huge choice of accompaniments. There's an amazing array of chuckneys, biscuits/crackers, olives, crisps etc. It's a brilliant place to try new and unusual cheeses that you just don't come accross in the superstores. Did I mention the friendly and helpful staff? if you're not sure of a choice, then try before you buy and there are suggestions galore from accross the counter. I would recommend a visit if you're in the area, it's a real treasure trove for food lovers.

The staff are keen for you to try all the delicious produce before you buy, to make sure that everything is just right. Over 140 cheeses are available and the knowledge of the staff is second to none. Definately worth a visit!

The shop goes out of its way to be the best in good cheese. It's always busy and yet the staff still treat you like an individual - and give you plenty of help and inspiration if you can't make up your mind!

On top of their amazing array of cheeses (the cheese bomb is beyond words!) they also sell anything from traditional hand-patted butter, farmhouse cakes and puddings, delicious fudge and an astounding array of chutneys and pickles.
