The Real Lancashire Black Pudding Company

2006 Regional Finalist
Butcher

Selling: Meats

Andrew Holt maintains East Lancashire's black pudding heritage at his Real Lancashire Black Pudding Company with a family recipe dating back to 1879. Holt's are award-winning puddings, but it's his new V Pud, a vegetarian black pudding, that has hit the headlines recently. Black and white puddings - both traditional and modern - are available by mail order, and at local farmer's markets.

When someone as big as Tina Turner sings a song about Andys black puddings, you know they have to be "simply the best".

Best white pudding ever tasted in England, reminded me of childhood holidays in Ireland.

These black puddings have just the right combination of herbs and spices to make them the best tasting puds in lancashire and Europe as his awards will show

Produce is simply the best! Whilst I was brought up in the North, I regularly order Andy's puds which are shipped quickly and cheaply to Kent. Can't and won't find any better down here!

Although I met Andy some time ago, through the farmers' markets, we've not been in touch for a while, until recently, at Stonyhurst Fine Food Festival. I had been demonstrating, and was leaving the demo area when Andy collared me to brainstorm ideas for his charity event on 17th Sept. I was concerned about moving my kit from the kitchen, and Andy volunteered his lovely son to move the heavy boxes full of kitchen gear for me. These are charming people, passionate about their product, and caring about their community. I wish you all the best, 'Go Andy!'

They always take part in local traditional events, such as folk dancing sessions at local pubs or food festivals. They can be seen with a smile on their face at each event and clearly love their product, which passes on to the customer a feeling of quality and real taste.

The best Lancashire black pudding there is, with no shadow of doubt. The white pudding is delicious fried for breakfast. The vegetarian black pudding is a triumph of modern invention.

Andy has worked on this business for well over a decade. When he bought it is was slightly famous locally but Andy took it to a whole new level. He has won over a hundred awards and all are well deserved, as he has worked so hard to get them. Sir Andrew as he is known in the black pudding world is a Chevalier Du Boudin Noir, which means he is a knight of the Black Pudding, has always strived to improve on his business, with the help of his friends family and staff he has done so. Another point that has been mentioned in other reviews is the business's ability to constantly evolve. This is due to Mr Holt. He experiments and uses his knowledge from life to come up with ideas like beer and raisin puddings, mustard seed puddings, smoked bacon puddings, the list could go on and on. The Real Lancashire Black Pudding Company deserves to win this prize as it would prove to everyone how hard they have worked and I would love to see Andy flying over Lancashire in a hot air balloon the shape of a black pudding.

I think it is brilliant that somebody can take a traditional delicacy and experiment with it to come up with so many brilliant ideas whilst at the same time keeping the traditional recipe the same for so many years.

Andy has worked really hard over the years to build up the business. When he bought the business in 1992 they produced under 1 tonne of black puddings per week, this has now grown to be in excess of 5 tonnes per week. Despite the growth in trade Andy has still managed to maintain a very high quality, and his puddings taste great! Sara
