The Royal Standard of England
Selling: Home-Cooked Dishes
The coat of arms and title were granted by Charles II in 1651 who sheltered here after the Battle of Worcester. With a history going back 900 years it's reputedly our oldest freehouse. The food is described as 'grandma's cooking at its best' and dishes like ham with free-range egg and chips, cottage pie and Welsh lamb chops from Tilley Farm in Elwy Valley fit the bill perfectly. The lunchtime cheeseboard with around 35 varieties is a speciality as are the Sunday roasts.

We use the Royal Standard for Aston Martin owners club meetings once a month and are recieved with great enthusiasm. Our suppers here are unsurpassed with something hearty for all. Nothing like good old fashioned traditional fayre.
My husband and I discovered this wonderul pub recently after watching a repeat of the 2006 Food Hero finals, I had to try the mouthwatering steak and kidney pudding featured in the clip! We ventured out one Saturday and eventually found it down a quite country road, sadly they had sold out of steak and kidney pudding so I had the bacon, badger a clanger, a local delicacy, not only was it the most delicious meal I had tasted in a long time, I was so full up from the huge portion I couldnt eat any of the yummy desserts! It took 2 more visits trying various delicious things on the menu before I struck lucky with the steak and kidney pudding and I wasnt disappointed! The food here is good old fashioned english food like my granny used to make, its stick to the ribs food and we have fallen in love with this place so much we visit at least a couple of times a week for dinner now! Not only is the food great but they have a wonderful range of beers and ales from all over the place, the belgian Strawberry Fruli is delicious and the locally made Chiltern light ale is very refreshing and goes down very well with the slow roasted belly of pork! We love this place and if you haven't been yet, go there, you'll love it as much as we do!
If you want to sample a genuinely traditional Buckinghamshire dish, try the Bacon Badger (beloved of Bucks grannies!) - I don't know of anywhere else that serves it. The pub's historic atmosphere is incomparable. Wonderful.
Terrific pub with friendly and helpful staff, excellent atmosphere, brilliant food, good range of interesting beers, traditional surroundings with plenty of chairs and tables outside for the summer evenings and lots of space for cars. What more could you ask for ?
Excellent food and drink - bonus of traditional "English" entertainment in the Summer - Morris dancing and traditional music
A wonderful old england pub set in the buckinghamshire countryside. Excellent parking. Lots of walking for ramblers, who can guarantee a wonderful hearty meal with a tankard of bear at the end! In the winter you can sit by the lovely old fires and in the summer you can enjoy outside eating in the large garden with lovely views and entertainment on certain days. I went when the morris dancers were there and it was great!
This pub has been turned round by the current owners. They have a great selection of beers and wines and the food is great.
