We love this little place! We just wish it was bigger-but that might mar the indivuality, we like the eccentric decor ranging from Budda to rainbow teddies! The food is fantastic-combinations so glorious both in main courses & desserts-They catainly put a whole heap of love in here=best in UK we think!

Vegetarian food so great that my carnivorous friends have no complains about going there; in fact they're usually the ones to suggest it. Friendly staff and wonderful deserts with exciting main courses make the rainbow cafe one of the best places to eat in Cambridge.

We love this family friendly place! We always seem to see the same friendly staff there, they're so welcoming and helpful to us! The food is great, lots of choice, especially for me as I am a dairy-intolerant! I also love the cakes, especially Ian (One of the waiters) who seems to love telling us about them! I like the no booking aspect as its seems very fair for everyone. Nice to eat somewhere local AND environmentally friendly!

My wife and I have visited the Rainbow many times over the years and have never been disappointed with the food. Staff are always extremely courteous and the atmosphere is superb. David and Lesley

The food is consistently delicious, hot and served with a smile. In this age of franchises, chains and cloned high streets, it is wonderful to have such a gem on our doorstep. I am not actually vegetarian but the food is so marvellous that this really doesn't matter. We go for the excellence of the cuisine and the good value and variety of the menu. Oh, and the service isn't bad at all either!

So grateful to find a place that cares about the customers and community. If you don't eat meat very hard to find a place which has special dishes without garlic and onions! They recycle enthusiastically too.(we asked)

great food with a wide choice for vegans and gluten free customers. amazing desserts!!! a great find in the heart of cambridge!!!!

My son is allergic to gluten and milk. He eats in the Rainbow Cafe with complete confidence despite the fact that he is extremely sensitive to even small amounts of cross-contamination. The menu is clearly marked so it is easy for him to know what dishes he can have - he can have a normal dining out experience.

Good energy in the Rainbow Cafe! We love it. Good soup in winter, salad in summer, lots of choice of food from all over and gorgeous desserts. Great place for just coffee and cake and no cardboard cups!!!

The Rainbow is truly special in Cambridge,if not in all Uk. Choice of international carefully crafted main courses and unbeleivable desserts, they are so good, and for vegans and gluten-free it is a treasure trove. Truly the pot of gold. Thank you.

As a non-vegetarian the Rainbow has provided me with interesting, delicious and delightful alternatives; whether for a quick lunch when I'm in town, an alternative venue for supper with a friend, a family celebration or a reliable venue to entertain a vegetarian or vegan friend.

Being a medically diagnosed Coeliac (and so needing a gluten-free diet) it can be stressful trying to find somewhere to eat out. The Rainbow Cafe almost provides too much choice - the range of gluten-free food is wonderful (especially the gluten-free lasagne). They are unfailingly welcoming - especially when I take my son along for his regular holiday treat, as I've been doing since he was about 18 months old.

Carol & I came to Cambridge to do some shopping on 13th July - our wedding anniversary-and in particular to treat ourselves to lunch at the much-recommended Rainbow Cafe. It's quaint and cosy, the portions are huge (couldn't fit in a dessert-damn!) and the prices represent great value. This place is up there with a handful of really great veggie eating places (mostly in Brighton). Many thanks - can't wait to return. Denis & Carol Barnard

From the first time I ventured down that little alley and discovered the pot of gold at the end of this Rainbow, I have never looked back. Nowhere else in Cambridge can match it for atmosphere, great value, great flavour food! It has opened my eyes and taste buds to a variety of vegetarian food. My daughter is so glad I found it, she was fed up with Mum's Vegetable Lasagne!

I eat here when I visit Cambridge. The food is delicious. The main courses are always full of flavour. The puddings are wonderful. The staff are helpful and friendly. As a vegatarian it is so nice to be able to order anything from the menu without worrying about the ingredients. My partner, who isn't a veggie also loves the food here, his favourite dish is the Latvian Potato Bake.

We always come here when in Cambridge, the food is fresh and well presented and we like the fact we always see the same people working. The restaurant is a little oasis and we like their eclectic collection of Lord Bhudda, Lord Krishna and other icons! We also appreciate the effort they make to ensure everything is environment-friendly-nothing dies for this place !

The Rainbow has scrummy food, from the Latvian Potato bake to the great soups to the brownies! And the restaurant/cafe has a lovely warm atmosphere.

Anna4 Anna4 Posted 20 Jun 2007 9:22 AM

This restaurant quite simply serves the best food in Cambridge - never mind the best vegetarian food. Don't be detered by the alleyway, you really won't be disappointed once you're inside.

We had a party of 14 for our daughters wedding breakfast, and the food and atmosphere and friendliness of the staff all contributed to make it a really special occasion. All the food and wine was excellent and I was particularly pleased as a non-cheese eating vegetarian to find multiple choices on the menu. I cannot praise it too highly.

I travel miles to visit the Rainbow. It is the best for vegetarian food. Everything is beautifully served, it tastes fantastic and the waiters are second to none. It should not be missed.

suze 1 suze 1 Posted 07 Aug 2006 9:55 PM

one of the best veggie restaurants in the country, we always include on a visit to Cambridge, very friendly, good food, not expensive

I am a Coeliac, gluten intolerant. I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful it is to be able to choose starters, mains and glorious puddings from a menu without worrying about the ingredients, as the menu is clearly labelled...I usually feel embarrassed to ask the staff in restaurants, who often have to take numerous trips to speak to the chef to find out if I can eat the dishes or not. Here, at the Rainbow Cafe, I can eat with confidence in a relaxed and calm environment. The food is amazing and caters for a wide range of tastes. The staff are friendly and genuinely interested in making your eating-out experience as enjoyable as possible. I travel for miles to have this treat!

I'm not a vegetarian, but I adore this place. The food's delicious, of fantastic quality and really good value and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The cheesecakes, in particular, are to die for. The menu's so extensive, the only problem I have is in deciding what to order.

every mouthful is better than the last. even when you're full, you're left wanting more! non veggies don't know what they're missing!

As a lifelong veggie, I'm so pleased to find somewhere that is dedicated to one such as myself. I do think the staff could be a bit friendlier though and the salads a bit more adventurous. But I'm voting because I believe the Rainbow as a vegetarian and healthy option, needs supporting.

I am gluten-intolerant so I am delighted to be able to eat delicious cakes with confidence. It's a good atmosphere with a wide range of customers. My favourite main course is Gado-Gado, made with local vegetables and peanut sauce. All my friends love it too!

andym 1 andym 1 Posted 07 Jul 2006 11:10 AM

Food is always fresh .The menus change and it is tasty and well priced. It is also very friendly.

It is so lovely to go to a good quality cafe where you know every mouthful is not only delicious and often unusual, but totally free from animal ingredients of any description. Not need to keep asking about gelatine in the pudding, or is the cheese rennet free? As a family of 6 vegetarians, that is such a relief, so we can then relax and enjoy the cosy atmosphere, away from the bustle of the Cambridge streets above you. And I love to see what new colour the walls have been painted, different every year! The service is also prompt and polite. Fantastic place, would recommend to all.

This little place is great, especially for vegans! They won Vegetarian Society Cafe of the Year Award which makes them pretty special.Staff are friendly and they have all been there for aeons. The owner does the cooking herself-something you don't find in these days of chains. The only fault is it's not big enough !
