What to eat during pregnancy – myths and facts

There are lots of myths about what you should and shouldn't eat during pregnancy - but what should mums-to be, like Market Kitchen's Amanda Lamb, actually eat?

Marmite with icecream, pickles with peanut butter, coal and laundry detergent - these are some of the unusual cravings experienced by up to three quarters of pregnant women.

But should cravings be indulged? What should and shouldn’t you be eating when you’re expecting? Pregnancy is an important time to take care of yourself and your unborn child, but it’s hard to know what to eat, especially when you’re craving junk food – or even non-foods like coal or ice– with little or no nutritional value.

As you may have seen on Market Kitchen, Amanda Lamb is expecting her first child soon. In an upcoming show, we’ll be inviting a nutritionist in to answer all of Amanda’s questions and discuss pregnancy myths & cravings, including whether foods should be avoided (unpasteurised cheese, shellfish, eggs) or included in the diet (folic acid, iron, fibre) and we’ll also reveal whether if you’re eating for two, you get to eat twice as much!

According to gurgle.com, the top ten crazy cravings during pregnancy are ice, coal, toothpaste, sponges, mud, chalk, laundry soap, matches, starch and rubber. Whether Amanda craves any of these during her pregnancy will be interesting to discover, but if you’ve got any anecdotes you’d like to share about nutrition during pregnancy, why not contribute to our online discussion on this topic in our forums? Or perhaps you'd like to ask a question about what's safe to eat? You might even get your question answered or story featured on the show!
