New festive rituals leave Christmas traditions behind

Pennies in puddings, eating Christmas cake and toasting the Queen are all in danger of becoming the ghosts of Christmas past as people modernise their festive rituals, according to a study of 3,000 adults, commissioned by UKTV and supported by Brian Turner.
Convenience has had a significant impact on the way the big day's meal is prepared, with over half revealing they will be microwaving at least two dishes and a quarter will be using bought pre-prepared food on Christmas Day.
Top of the rituals on the way out is the festive favourite of putting a penny into the Christmas pudding, with only 3% predicting that they will do so this year. Instead of the coin boozy Brits are more likely to add alcoholic butters to their pudding, and a smaller percentage will be dousing it in Brandy before setting it alight.
The survey reveals too that Christmas cake is rapidly falling out of fashion with the population, with over half preferring to tuck into alternative treats. New festive favorites include trifle (57%), yuletide chocolate log (55%), German stollen (25%) and Italian panatone (14%). A third (35%) admitted to still having last year's Christmas cake in a cupboard and a mere 21% will be making their own Christmas pudding this year.
- Two thirds of Brits will enjoy a Champagne breakfast this year
- Yuletide chocolate log, stollen and panatone proving more popular than christmas cake
- Just 3% will put a coin in the Christmas pudding
