Fairtrade

26 February to 11 March 2007 is Fairtrade Fortnight - we look at what Fairtrade is, why it's needed, and how to get involved...
Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for food producers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalised by the current trading system, through ethical and socially responsible trade.
Trade is one of the best ways for people in developing countries to fight poverty and build sustainable livelihoods. However, our current international trade system limits these poorer countries, especially in agriculture, through the use of tariffs, export subsidies, and an on-going demand for lower prices.
How do I know a product is Fairtrade?
The FAIRTRADE logo is an independent consumer label, which appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. For a product to display the FAIRTRADE Mark it must meet international Fairtrade standards. The international certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO) fairtrade.net sets these standards. Producer organizations that supply Fairtrade products are inspected and certified by FLO. They receive a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production, and an extra premium that is invested in social or economic development projects.
Five guarantees FAIRTRADE products must meet...
1. Farmers a fair and stable price for their products
2. Extra income for farmers and estate workers to improve their lives
3. A greater respect for the environment
4. Small farmers a stronger position in world markets
5. A closer link between consumers and producers
Fairtrade Fortnight
Fairtrade Fortnight runs from 26 February to 11 March 2007. This year's theme is Change Today, Choose Fairtrade. The campaign is encouraging consumers to choose Fairtrade over non-certified products - which could in fact fill your whole trolley as there's now over 2000 Fairtrade certified products available.
Products include beer, biscuits, cakes & brownies, cereals & bars, chocolate, chutney and preserves, cocoa, coffee, cosmetics, dried fruit, fresh fruit, honey, hot chocolate, jams and spreads, juice, nuts, spirits, sugar, tea and herbal tea, and wine.
