Saha by Greg Malouf and Lucy Malouf

Greg Malouf was born in Australia to a Lebanese family. This book is his journey through Lebanon and Syria discovering the traditional tastes of the family cooking he enjoyed as a child, recipes and flavours that date back thousands of years. It is also a celebration of new dishes, of food as it is cooked and enjoyed today.

The beauty of Saha is that you feel you are part of this journey of discovery, of Lebanon in happier times and of Syria and its beautiful landscapes.
The book is split into regions, and the narrative explains both the history and culture that have led to some wonderfully rich and aromatic flavours. It is told as a story and you meet many characters along the way. You could simply read it as such but to miss out on the recipes would certainly be a loss to your kitchen and your tastebuds.
The names of the dishes are as evocative as the story and the images that go with it. Who could resist the allure of Jewelled Cracked Wheat Pilaff with Honey-Ginger Tomato Sauce, Slow-Roasted Lamb with Red Pepper and Pomegranate Paste or Blackberry and Halawa Salad with Watermelon and Rosewater Sorbet. A cook book to be savoured.
