Its members take pride in cooking with local produce and place great emphasis on preserving culinary traditions and cultural identities.
Slow Food has now grown to an international organisation with over 80 000 members in more than 100 countries, including Japan, Switzerland, and more recently the UK.
Extending its reach, Slow Food is more of a philosophy - a belief in wholesome, healthy cooking styles, and dishes made with fresh and flavoursome ingredients.
There's a lot to be said for putting aside time for appreciating meals made from scratch, and for the enjoyment of sharing great conversation in a relaxed environment.
You don't have to live on a farm to put the Slow Food ethos into action, neither do you have to become a new-age icon. Start off by giving convenience foods a miss and plump for simple, tasteful recipes to tempt you back into the kitchen and rediscover home cooking.
That's not to say you're going to end up being chained to the stove simmering casseroles and soups for hours on end. If time is short, what could be more satisfying than a hunk of quality bread, creamy goat's cheese and maybe a lush ripe fig on the side? It's really that simple.
Next time you dial-up for a pizza, spare a few minutes for your local farmer, the neighbourhood grocer, and the family and friends you look forward to sharing meals with. Shop local and ditch the ready meals laden with preservatives - that's the key to getting off to a flying start.
