Waffle iron

In general, the best irons have a non-stick surface, a heavy outer casing and a lid that clamps shut. Some have choice of settings for crust colour. Others ping charmingly when hot enough to use, and again when your waffle is ready.

These machines can get very hot, which means it's a good idea to wear oven gloves while cooking. Be careful not to over-fill, or the batter will ooze out then burn on the hot exterior.

For irresistible waffles are irresistible try them topped with whipped cream or yogurt, maple syrup or fruit sauce. They're just as delicious with savoury toppings, such as cream cheese and dill, or sizzled cherry tomatoes with grated Parmesan.

You might also want to experiment with unusual flours such as buckwheat or cornmeal, or try flavourings such as grated cheese, chopped fresh herbs or freshly ground spices.

Electric waffle irons can't be submerged in water. If food has stuck to the patterned surface, remove with a small brush once the machine has cooled down.
