Star anise
The star-shaped fruit of a Chinese evergreen tree has a strong aniseed flavour similar to anise. It is a key component in Chinese five spice powder and is also important in Indian and Indonesian cooking.
The spice can be added whole to dishes to let its flavour infuse your cooking, or ground and added more sparingly.
