Cheapest and simplest is the plug-in version of the traditional Italian stovetop espresso maker. However, the most expensive machines cost several hundred pounds, which only the most dedicated coffee-lover could truly justify.

Fortunately, the choice of mid-priced machines is increasing. They produce a first-rate cup of espresso and are almost as impressive as the expensive models.

Before buying, spend some time comparing different machines. It is important to consider the different functions rather than being swayed by good looks.

Pre-packaged pods

You might be tempted by the machines that offer pre-packaged coffee pods. On the plus side: no messy brewing or worrying about the type of bean or the grind. On the down side: the cost of the coffee is very high, you're likely to be tied to the same brand, and you'll be throwing away more rubbish..

Care

Regular cleaning is important. Keep the filter and holder clear of coffee grounds and don't let the spray head get clogged. Rinse the drip tray and knock-out box if there is one. It's also a good idea to get in the habit of wiping the steam nozzle clean each time you use it; a build-up of burnt milk can clog it up.
