Electricals

Steamer

Save time, fuel and hob space with a multi-layered steamer.

Any multi-tiered steamer, electric or otherwise, is a fantastic investment if you're short of hob space. If you load up the tiers with different foods you can cook a complete main course over one heat source, saving both time and fuel.

The advantages of electric models include automatic switch-off, akeep-warm facilities, a timer and an alarm to warn you when the liquid is about to boil dry. These models produce steam in a few seconds - far quicker than waiting for a pan of water to boil.

Some models have removable 'floors' so you can transform two layers into one large one, for example, if you wanted to steam a chicken. A pull-out drawer is useful for topping up water without interrupting cooking.

Clean flavours

Steaming brings out the clean, fresh flavours of food and is excellent for low-fat cooking. Steamed white fish becomes exceptionally tasty, as do delicately flavoured vegetables such as courgettes and green beans.

Use the vitamin-packed juices that collect at the bottom for soups and sauces made on the hob, or just dive in and drink

Versatility

Once you've got the hang of it you'll realise how versatile steaming can be. It's fun to try exciting things like Mexican tamales, stuffed vine leaves or Chinese dim sum dumplings. Don't forget British steamed puddings such as steak and kidney or spotted dick.

If you decide to invest in a steamer, it's well worth going for a three-tiered version. Some models have stainless steel containers and others come in clear plastic, which lets you see how the food is coming along.
