JFK, the film

Jim Garrison, New Orleans district attorney wants to know the why, the who and the how of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy's assassination. With his dedicated team he pursues the truth, putting his own family at risk by getting dangerously close. He leaves no stone unturned and manages to disturb most of the American establishment.

So familiar
JFK is one of those films that will make you say repeatedly, "I know that guy. What was he in?" Well known faces such as Kevin Costner, Kevin Bacon, Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Oldman appear onscreen. The unstoppable Sissy Spacek (Carrie, The Coal Miner's Daughter) shows up, as does character actor Vincent D'Onofrio (The Player, Men in Black) and The Odd Couple, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Actually, it seems that most of Hollywood took part in JFK. Looks like the casting agent had a bit of clout!

Conspiracy theories
JFK's assassination is by far the most intriguing event in history for conspiracy theorists. Was it a plot by the CIA because JFK was not tough enough on communists? Was it financed by the military-industrial lobby because JFK was planning to reduce defence spending in Vietnam? Was it done by a Cuban commando? There are more than 7,000 websites dedicated to the issue, and they only agree on one thing: it was definitely not Lee Harvey Oswald.

Rollercoaster Costner
Kevin Costner is not everybody's favourite actor and his career has had its share of ups and down. But when the role is cut for him, he delivers. See his performance as Eliot Ness in the Untouchables or Crash Davis in Bull Durham for further proof. In JFK, Costner gives Jim Garrison heaps of credibility both as a district attorney and a family man. A much better performance than his mysterious sailor with webbed feet in Waterworld.

The other K's
It has been said that carrying the name Kennedy is a curse. Just five years after JFK's assassination, tragedy struck again when Robert was murdered in Los Angeles. Edward, the third brother, was involved in both a car wreck and plane crash but survived both. In 1997, Michael Kennedy, Robert's son, died in a skiing accident and just two years later JFK Jnr went down with his plane off Martha's Vineyard. Once is careless. . .
