The Re-Inventors
The Greatest Inventor - Your Verdict

The Greatest Inventor - Your Verdict

We asked you who you thought were the greatest inventors of the last 50 years. And here is your verdict.

The greatest invention of last 50 years? As we expected, you chose the internet with a massive 60.2% of the vote, with the contraceptive pill a far distant second on 15.3%. Surprisingly, 4% of you thought the space shuttle the best. Poor old Viagra could only raise 2 votes!

Of the other inventions that you said had changed your life, cars and air travel were the most common while the fact that tampons, hair straighteners and bras got a big shout. Other choices that caught our eye were ear muffs, beer, the catflap, muesli, the trampoline and, most confusingly, sex.

With the internet getting your ealier seal of approval, it was no surprise that Tim Berners Lee, the inventor of the internet, got the most votes (49%) as the greatest inventor of the last 50 years. Bill Gates (Microsoft Windows) was second with 16.9% while good old Wilson Greatbach, the inventor of the internal pacemaker, gained 14.5%. Your biggest waste of time of an invention of the last 50 years? Poor old Sir Clive Sinclair's C5.

And finally, when it came to finding out what you would like to see invented by the world's best inventor, time travel was the clear winner with cheap, clean energy a close second. Seems seeing the past and the future is more important to you than a clean planet!

Some of your other suggestions were, however, truly bizarre, including: "a machine that would tell me what cats are saying", "a device that stops my girlfriend from nagging me" and "the spray-on condom".
