Suits
Witty new legal drama Suits is positively brimming with complex cases, morally bankrupt schemers and banter more cutting than a diamond-lined cheese-wire. In other words, Ally McBeal it ain't.
Now, you'd think that in order to be a high-flyer in a top New York law firm, you'd sort of need to be a lawyer. It's the first qualification someone would look for in a CV, arguably. But tell that to Mike Ross, the unlikely hero of brand spanking new US series Suits. His path to legal eagledom is a little unusual, to say the least. And by "unusual" we mean he got his interview at the firm while fleeing the cops. From a drugs bust. Now that's something they don't prep you for at Harvard Law.
So what's the deal here? Well, Mike is a genius. He can memorise books almost at a glance, a bit like that robot from Short Circuit – only without the annoying voice. His talent, coupled with a passion for law, makes him a walking encyclopaedia of legal knowledge. The trouble is, some dodgy circumstances in his past meant he had to drop out of college, so when we first meet him in Suits he's making a living by doing people's law school entrance exams for them. Naughty Mike! But he eventually makes up for it when he almost literally stumbles into the office of Mr Harvey Specter.
Ah, Harvey Specter – the TRUE star of the show. A strutting, sharp-suited shark on legs, who prides himself on being the best closer in town and worships Captain Kirk (the guy rules, OK? So quit the jibes). He's a hotshot at the law firm and looking for an associate. Despite realising that Mike is, er, a few qualifications short of being an actual lawyer, Harvey takes a chance on him, what with Mike being a bona fide genius and all. And there's your basic set up right there: the ruthless alpha male teams up with the idealistic young 'un, to take on a bunch of thorny cases and learn a little something from each other along the way. While arguing lots.
Of course, this is not just The Mike and Harvey Show. And not just because that would make it sound like a comedy series circa 1973. No, Suits also has a colourful entourage of supporting characters – beginning with the big baddie, Louis Litt. OK, so calling him a "baddie" is a bit of an exaggeration. He's not an actual villain villain, he's just Harvey and Mike's in-house rival. So bitter you could it makes your tongue sort of curl up just to look at him, he's out to "get" our two guys and establish himself as the true power in the firm. So yes, feel free to boo and hiss whenever he skulks on screen.
There's also Rachel Zane, a ravishing paralegal who helps steer Mike through the murky rapids of the legal world. She doesn't suffer fools gladly and is very, very tired of being hit on by every bloke within a metre's radius, so Mike will have to play his cards right with her. But put it this way: romance may well blossom, if he doesn't irritate her too much.
There's also Jessica Pearson, played by Laurence Fishburne's wife, coolly enough. She's Harvey's boss and is sort of a mum figure. Which means she'll always support her boy, but isn't afraid of doling out a severe spanking (metaphorically speaking) whenever he gets too big for his boots. He’ll have to be careful she doesn't rumble ALL of his amoral plans, or he may just use up the last dregs of her patience and find himself kicked the heck out of there.
And then of course there are all the clients, courtroom hangers-on, ex-mentors, ex-lovers and all-out baddies our boys will have to deal with over the course of the show. It's going to be a hell of a ride, so gel your hair, dig that suit out of your wardrobe (yeah, we know it's 80% polyester and doesn't fit) and get ready to step into court with Harvey and Mike. Just don't get done for contempt, yeah?

I'm afraid we've put our Suits away in the wardrobe for now - it's finished on the channel and on the site's 7 day catch up service. It'll be on again later in the year but we don't have definite dates at the moment.

What a cliff-hanger to leave it on!! I can't wait for Suits to reappear on our screens. A first-class drama, and last night's episode was superb. I thought nothing would ever equal the brilliant LA Law, but Suits certainly does. Harvey is a really great character.

It's THE only programme I watch. Nothing compares to this, the chemistry of the characters, the sharp dialogue, the intelligent use of interaction and the driving story line make this the most compelling serial I have ever watched - and I am nearly 60 years old!

I can not believe that next week is the last of the present series, it's gone by too quick - the makers should make the series last longer so that you really get into whats going on.Last nights show (11#) was again very good.

@ChristineL74652 the only place you can watch Suites episodes online legally in the UK is iTunes thetvking.com has links. http://www.thetvking.com/tvshows/27200/suits/series/1/episode/1/ Seems Dave only have the rights to air the last episode online. Which is disappointing but better than most of the UKTV group which don't have any full episodes to watch online.

Great show, Poor site. I think they might have blown the budget on the show and left the site in 1996. Tried for 2 days to watch the episode i missed (not my fault issue with my sky plus whilst away) but it keeps freezing and going back to the beginning. So frustrated and annoyed!! Dave please get someone who is at least in Secondary school to build your site!! PLEASE SORT THIS ASAP

@Cher-Marie -- each episode is repeated on television three times in one week. You can catch up on 11 February when there is a "Suits" evening -- all of the first four episodes again. I don't associate Dave with the "police, camera, action" type programmes. I should have thought this is more Pick TV, Channel 5 and ITV4?

A fantastic second episode last night. Very well written, very clever, with unexpected and wholly brilliant twists in the plot as the storyline unfolded. This is extremely high quality drama with just the right amount of humour. I'm a huge fan already! Well done, Dave, this reflects very well on the channel. Excellent choice.

"Suits" is totally brilliant. I started watching episode one after midnight the other night, thinking I would just watch ten or 15 minutes to wind down -- was so gripped by it that I stayed up well into the early hours to see what happened. I am hooked after the first episode. It is very clever, very slick. I never thought there would be a show that could equal "LA Law", but this undoubtedly does. Am eagerly anticipating the remaining episodes in this series!
