Top Gear
Top Gear was once the programme your dad would force everyone to watch - his quiet revenge for having to sit through your mum's frequent doses of Corrie or EastEnders.
Lest we forget, Top Gear started out way back in the 1970s, and its original presenters included Angela Rippon and Noel Edmonds. No, this isn't some sick attempt to sully the reputation of an iconic show. It was Rippon, we tell you. Rippon and Edmonds. Admittedly, it did improve a fair bit after that, with the likes of Tiff Needell coming on board, and in the late 80s a certain burly, big-haired, big-gobbed chap by the name of Jeremy Clarkson turned up to give the show a good kick up the backside.
Yet, despite the increasingly witty reviews and occasional accusations of macho posturing from the press, there's no denying that Top Gear version 1.0 was essentially a proper, fact-filled car review show and therefore incredibly dull for anyone who a) couldn't care less about cars or b) wasn't your dad. Eventually, the Beeb couldn't ignore the slide in ratings any longer. They decided that Top Gear was about as unfashionable as Jeremy Clarkson's dress sense, and axed the series in 2001.
Then, just when the guys over at Fifth Gear were settling into their groove as our new petrolhead overlords, came the most unexpected resurrection since Aslan the lion's. We'd love to have been there in the brainstorming sessions that led to the format being rebooted. In fact, we can just see it now: "Hey guys, what we need are fewer reviews and more, you know, exploding caravans!" Sage nods all round, and lo! The new Top Gear was born - a show that bears as much resemblance to its predecessor as the Sex Pistols do to Genesis.
The most startling thing was this: you no longer had to actually give two hoots about cars to enjoy Top Gear. It was suddenly the funniest show on the box – a kind of weekly, British version of the Cannonball Run, hosted by three blokes having a laugh (often at each other's expense). Of course, viewers have since been divided over which presenter is best. Dads and lads like Clarkson, car geeks like James May, and (as long-suffering boyfriends well know) every single female viewer likes Richard Hammond. And everyone's got their favourite stunt - from "car darts" to the time they turned a Reliant Robin into a space shuttle. And let's not forget the car ski jump, which could only have been improved if Eddie the Eagle had been strapped into the driving seat.
There's also the thing of genius that is the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, a segment which actually puts most mainstream chatshows to shame. There's something about talking about cars that always seems to relax the celebs and encourage them to just natter away, almost as if they're down the pub, with the result that even James Blunt came across as a witty and likeable guy. And some of the conversations end up becoming brilliantly random too – like Guy Richie going on about his deep and unlikely passion for, er, "winching".
Of course, Top Gear's also famed for its adventures abroad – from the boys being stuck in the Amazon and having to go all Ray Mears, to the now legendary road trip across America which involved a car emblazoned with the immortal slogan "Man Love Rules OK". Which actually led to a genuine (and genuinely scary) confrontation with the locals. Is there any other show you can imagine skirting so close to the edge? No, we can't either.

I've just been watching Top Gear on Dave. Jeremy and the lads were talking about the Wiesmann car. I'd just like to point out that Jeremy pronounced the name wrong - he called it Weismann which is incorrect. The letters 'ie' are pronounced like 'ee'!

Get a life this is purile rubbish get off the couch! those guys at TG are laughing all the way to the bank with continuous and continuous repeats.When the show is live and up to date its the best. Why dont you instead of watching reapeats "ad naseum" go and do your own TG stuff you wont have 30 person strong TV crew but at least you will know that it is real other than Clarkson and the others fooling you all the time.Put the repeats to rest forever and forever.

we dont have dave on our home tv so whenever we are at our grandparents house, I always make sure I tune in to dave to watch a good ol' bit of top gear. It is always nice to see cool old episides that you never seem to see on BBC 1,2,3 or 4. top gear is one of my favourite programmes ever!

What a show... i have been watching top gear for some years now but have never hap the oportunity to comment on the guys. Well, here i go: absolutely briliant, unbelievably entertaining, hat off to production and execution teams, you make television that many should learn from. as a petrol head myself unfortunately i have never had many oportunities in playing around with motors apart from breaking my own, well at least what i can afford. i am 26 and would absolutely do more less anything to be in either of James', Jeremy's, Hamond's, Stig's shoes... I'm a biggggg fan of TG!! I have watched every season every episode of it.. It was a shame that I missed the 'exhibition' in Middlesborough last season, it was very close to where I am studying. Iam now planing to attend a live in November, it would be soooo sweet if I can make it.. Not sure if Jeremy, Richard and Capitain Slow can see it. Some say, best show EVER, and I totally agree. But, Dave, must also agree with the complaints about the TOOOOO LONG ad. breaks (and so many of them)! Make more "Specials" pleeeze, loved the USA show with the mad rednecks ;-) Wonderful team, they get on so well and make the show as entertaining as it is, ie Jezza & his 'roofed roadkill cow', James's 'secret filming' :o, and the GORGEROUS Hamster.

i absolutely love top gear but am wondering if any of the staff at dave realise that they have done alot more than 5 shows of it??? wot im getting at hear is every time i seem 2 watch it on dave it always seems to be 1 of about 5 different shows repeated. i am watching it at the moment and it's the showing of when the team try 2 find the best driving road in the world. it's a good showing but this has got to be about the 50th time ive seen it. i would appreciate it if the people of dave would show all the different showings of the show but im sure it would help your ratings as people wont be turning over due to the fact that they have seen it already. thanks an i hope my thoughts have open daves eyes and maybe we all might see abit more of our favorite tv show. thanks again, Liam.

Top Gear's great, I am into cars but I know lots of people who watch it that know nothing about motoring - the rapport that Clarkson, May and Hammond have makes the show so entertaining (5th Gear just ain't the same!) I'm always watching re-runs and my boyfriend despairs! He came home from work today to find me watching the episode where they each make their own Police car - hilarious! He thinks I only watch 'em because I fancy James May, but that's just one reason!

i think the show has some very good points BUT on watching previous shows with clarkson in particular test driving on PUBLIC roads his knowledge of roadcraft and obeying the rules of overtaking moving vehicles one hand on the steering wheel overtaking and crossing chevrons is not good for younger drivers i THROW out a challenge to HIM against ME to take a driving test AGAIN i dont think he would pass i WOULD

PLEASE Stop showing the same episodes at lunchtime, and dinner time! Why the heck would you want to do that?! You dont see the BBC repeating programs twice in one month, let alone a day! Why cant you just go from S1 - S12, over and over....that would be better than repeating what seems to be about 6 episodes over and over again! I've seen this one about 10 times on dave recently!!! Oh, and ditch 5th gear....its for channel 5 wallies, not Dave'ians!

Saw the show with their mothers taking part. It was fantastic. Their mothers should be on the show more often. The 'lads' already act like naughty schoolboys most of the time, so having their mums telling them off every now and then would be soooo funny.

Top Gear must be my favourite TV show of all time i cant think of anythink better. I love it soo much i saw top gear live last year. Jezza is legendary Richard is the best and James is awsome. The stig is amazing. I have watched every single episode and own every dvd that is out and will own if there is more to come. All the boys do a brilliant job keep it up! Cant wait till the next series comes along it will be as brilliant as all the others. there is only one episode that i didnt like and that one was where hammond had the big crash i was scared and worried about him like everyone else was. But i am so pleased he is back to his normal self now and he has not had he teeth whitened !

I've just seen the episode with the HGVs not so long ago on Dave and was shocked to see that the bit with Hamster hitching up the trailer had been cut out. That ruined for me I must say. Top Gear gets better and better by the year. It is undoubtedly the best programme ever made. Jezza is legendary, James is brilliant and Richard is err..has had his teeth whitened. The Stig is the coolest man (or machine) in the entire known universe. My favourite episode is every one except for the one where the hamster recalled his huge accident, which was melancholic but it is important that he is still with us as Top Gear wouldnt be the same without Lofty. I like Captain Slow very muchly as he is the blokiest chap in the world.

Getting really annoyed with the clunky cuts Dave makes to cut the programme down enough to fit in the ads. Even worse they lazily recycle the old summaries of the content from the old BBC shows so you end up with a programme that says it will include a particular section which then isn't shown, but is referred to in some of the studio sections and is shown in the end titles but you don't get to see.

one of my fav moments on TG was the USA one when they painted eachothers cars. The Hamster had - MAN LOVE RULES - written in pink !! haha they nearly got shot. I can watch this programme one after the other. I love the way they rip the brown stuff out of May. Another good programme is OZ and James (may) when they tour around the UK , basically getting paid to get pissed! very funny!

Motoring. When I became a motorist in1939, to drive around our UK roads was pretty near sublime, no other cars for miles on end, no signs but cautionary ones, no parking-slots to tend. A.A. men in gauntlet gloves, would stand by motor bikes & side-cars, and salute you as you drove. Double-de-clutch and gated gears were the order of the day, and if you didn't judge 'em right your cogs would grind away! Lagondas and Bentleys would sometimes pass you by, with lovely coach built Rolls Royces, all made in this land, along with 50 more I'd say and that's without much try, all of them very different in each distinctive brand, unlike those nowadays, which are nothing like so grand!! Those were the days when a motor-car could dally, for scenery which took the eye, or at the driver's whim, no great speed was wanted, unless upon a Rally, the cup of life was full, and enjoyable to the brim. Nowadays it's rush and tear, and who can get 'there' faster, no time to slow and enjoy a view, or too much time will pass, so like the 'oozlam bird' when speed was master, Man's destination may be his, arr! Hi Black_Thirteen nice to see another girlie who likes TG it's good that more women are getting interested in cars I always got nasty remarks made towards me due to my car interest. I was never taken seriously until I mentioned my interest to a couple of female friends and they asked about TG and the 3 of us had a great girls day out at TG Live. The fact that TG has all male presenters certainly hasn't stopped me from watching either. Keep it Revved!

top gear is sick i am a big fan of the ariel atom and top gear still havent showed the new atom v8 version it will be quicker than the caterham r500 the new atom has got a whopping v8 with 500 hp with a front splitter side skirts and a huge rear spoiler . I am only 14 and i know all this and can anyone tell me where to get an areil atom drive thriller.

I like Top Gear, but for the Hosts, particularly Jeremy Clarkson. I feel he is epitome of victorian arrogance. For him everything British is wonderful (He is like frog in the WELL). Thinks he know everthing about car and that is just any other journalists who thinks he/she is encyclopedia. What he and his team of jokes know is BMW, Ferrari, Porsche and a few other European car. They talk of performance rather than economy. Jeremy Clarkson cant bear anything that is not British.

Pure genius! Being of the female species, I never thought that I would like this show and yet here I am today, praying every night that I will one day own a jag xkr... Anyway, this is show is absolutely superb - the bluntness and general little-boys-in-a-playground atmosphere makes it one of the most hilarious things I've ever watched! From the jibes about Stig to the ridiculous car tests, there's never a dull moment.
