  • The average Briton will spend two weeks over their lifetime waiting for traffic lights to change, five days looking for a city parking space and four months stuck in traffic jams.

  • Young men have the most chance of being killed in an accident: in 2001, 2,068 British men between 18 and 34 years old died in accidents, while women of the same age suffered only 448 fatalities.

  • It is estimated that at any one time, 32 per cent of the British population are sleeping, 11 per cent are eating, 0.7 per cent are drunk, 0.3 per cent are in the bath or shower, and 0.2 per cent are having sex.

  • Each week, the average Briton watches 9.6 hours of TV. This figure rises for pensioners and the very young – children aged 8 to 13 watch an astonishing 26.3 hours of television per week. Or, in other words, some 800 adverts every week.

  • Some good news for bachelors: there are now more women than men aged over 21 in the UK. Lonesome lads should head for Eastbourne, where 60 per cent of the population is female. Meanwhile, ladies looking for a large pool of unattached men should visit Richmond, with 8,000 more men than women in the London borough.
