Harry Enfield
Kevin the Teenager, Stavos and Tim (nice but dim), Harry Enfield has created some truly unforgettable characters over the years. But what about the man himself...
Stavros, Kevin and Tim
Harry Enfield became a legend in the 80's. His characters quickly became national institutions everyone could relate to from Stavros, the Greek kebab seller to Loads-a-Money, the vulgar yuppie. By the early 90's he was on with Harry Enfield's Television Programme on BBC2 followed by the phenomenally successful Harry Enfield and Chums in 92. In 94 Harry introduced Kevin the Teenager to the nation, as well as Tim Nice-but-Dim, The Slobs and the Old Gits.
Teamwork
Harry Enfield started writing with Charlie Higson and Paul Whitehouse back at University when the three students lived on the same Hackney estate. The collaboration took them to Saturday Night Live. Whitehouse and Enfield carried on working together on Harry Enfield's Television Programme with the added help of Kathy Burke who stayed on board for Harry Enfield and Chums. Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson's also hatched their own series, the Fast Show. Harry's latest endeavour 'Celeb' sees him playing ageing rocker, Gary Bloke.
Music for the masses
It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but you have to admire the man for trying. In the mid 90's Harry brought opera to the nation with Harry Enfield's Guide To Opera, a six-week series explaining the ins and outs of the world of opera. Bringing humour to a serious and sometimes stuffy subject, Harry created the Opera Ponces and Dad and Son, the two Covent Garden porters to break down a few musical barriers!
Nice to meet you, sir
Harry hasn't always been the most popular bloke in town. "About ten years ago I appeared on Wogan as myself. The next day a man came up to me in the street and said, 'You're Harry Enfield, aren't you? I love your characters! Stavros cracks me up and as for Loadsamoney - he's the biz! But I saw you on Wogan last night - you're a right prat in real life, aren't you?' Being the sort of person who hates disagreeing with anyone, I said, 'Hmm, yes I am. Sorry.' 'Don't worry about it, Aich!' he continued. 'It's nice to meet you anyway! Be lucky!' He shook my hand and sauntered away."
Harry had a little one
When Harry made 'Kevin And Perry - The Movie', he was fitted with an electronic penis to simulate erections, constantly popping up in his teenage shorts. On location, Enfield asked for the angle of the bulge to be increased, while the length be shortened. "It's not length, it's height." For once an actor picks a smaller stunt penis!
Some of Enfield's best catchphrases
Oi No!
Brriilliant!
Only me!
You don't wanna do it like that...
I'm considerably richer than you
Calm Down, Calm Down
And of course making loadsamoney!!
