Jon Culshaw
If you're anyone - then Jon Culshaw can probably impersonate you! He even managed to fool Tony Blair into thinking he was William Hague!
Who does he do?
Jon has a catalogue of over 350 impersonations!
His first big job came on Spitting Image in 1994 where he provided voice-overs for 40 different celebrities including Frank Bruno, David Frost, Kenneth Clark, Michael Portillo, Bill Clinton, Mr Motivator and Liam Gallagher. Jon also imitates the likes of Michael Buerk, Desmond Lynam, Billy Connolly, Ozzy Osbourne, Eamonn Holmes, Ian Hislop and David Brent.
Comedy Idol
Jon broke through onto the comedy scene after winning a talent search BBC Radio One's "Talent '93". The show aired on "Steve Wright In The Afternoon" and the lad from Lancashire impressed. Not bad in a competition with 8,000 candidates!
That William Hague Gag
Jon really pushed the boat out in 1998 by conning the No 10 Downing street switchboard thanks to his uncanny William Hague impression. After getting past the operators Jon spoke to Prime Minister Tony Blair live on London's Capital FM. In this incredible hoax, Jon, as the leader of the conservative party chatted away to Tony and told him he had acquired a Cher fitness video for him at a car boot sale! Even the PM couldn't tell it wasn't Mr Hague on the end of the line...
From Comic Relief to Dead Ringers
By 1995 Jon featured in Richard Curtis' comic relief movie "Oliver II Let's Twist Again". Following on from that came numerous slots on C4's "Big Breakfast", guest appearance on "They Think It's All Over", "Never Mind the Buzzcocks", "Call My Bluff," "Talking Telephone Numbers," and "The Big Stage". Jon also made it big on radio with "And This is Them" on Radio 2 and his sideline with Chris Moyles on Radio 1 as the crew's very own impressionist. He also cheers up Capital FM's "Steve Penk Show" with his infamous 'wind up' phone calls and, hit the jackpot with "Dead Ringers" for Radio 4 which then moved onto the TV screen.
Famous Fans
Jon says most of his targets don't bear any hard feelings! "All of the people that I've met have reacted very positively I'm happy to say. I understand that Michael Buerk and John Humphrys both like their interpretations and Brian Perkins (the BBC newsreader) was very complimentary. He was flattered at being impersonated ... even though we make him an absolute thug! You always wonder what they're going to think." Others to be impressed are the Prince of Wales who saw Jon perform at St James's Palace to celebrate The Archers' 50th anniversary. "The Prince Charles impression came right at the end. Everybody knew what was going to happen and looked at Prince Charles and at me. I fluffed the line, but everybody thought it was part of it. But he was laughing heartily, so I'm pleased about that."
Awards galore
Dead Ringers has achieved global success and won the Broadcasting Press Guild Award as the Best Radio Programme in 2000 and, a year later it was rewarded with the Sony Gold Radio Academy Award for Best Comedy Show and the British Comedy Awards for Best Radio Comedy.
