They Think It's All Over
They Think It's All Over is the cheeky, childish yang to A Question of Sport's upright, sensible yin. It's a chance for comics and sporting heroes alike to make complete fools of themselves in the name of entertainment.
No interest? No problem
Hosted by gravel-voiced charmer Nick Hancock - the drinking woman's Honor Blackman, or thereabouts - TTIAO's unique selling point is its unerring ability to appeal to people without a sporting bone in their body, offering a comedic olive branch to the uninitiated in return for a few ball-related giggles. TTIAO is to sport as Eurovision is to music: fun to watch regardless of your allegiance.
Dull and duller
In a casting masterstroke on a par with shoehorning Robert de Niro into Meet the Parents, the people behind TTIAO decided that Hancock needed regular team captains. So, who better to pick than two of the most tedious scions of sporting conservatism available: quietly posh former England cricket captain David Gower and squeaky-clean football-star-turned-commentator Gary Lineker. Surprisingly both blossomed quickly under the programme's welcoming wing, and Lineker in particular proved to be really quite funny.
Feeling sporty
TTIAO's most famous round is called Feel the Sportsman. As one might imagine, it involves contestants wearing blindfolds, touching a strategically-placed sporting hero and trying to figure out who on Earth they are by feel (and occasionally smell) alone. While this might be relatively easy when presented with, say, a two-man rowing squad, boat and all - yes, Redgrave and Pinsent have done the honours - it's understandably less straightforward with the Italian women's figure-skating team.
Men behaving sadly
If it's unreconstructed sexism and a touch of crass vernacular you're after, look no further than comedy sidekick Rory McGrath. The strangely-bearded comic has been a TTIAO regular from the off, providing occasional amusement with the above-mentioned grope-a-celeb round and his unrelenting lambasting of a beleaguered Gower. His connection to the world of professional sport remains unclear, but McGrath seems to have found his niche.
