Alistair McGowan
Alistair McGowan graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1989 and soon began working the stand-up comic circuit playing around the country including at the prestigious Comedy Store in London.
Who's he been?
Thanks to an excellent make-up, costumes and raw talent, Alistair McGowan and his team mate, Ronni Ancona, have been able to parody an impressive range of big names. The pair have taken the mickey out of everyone from TV presenters Richard and Judy, Robert Kilroy-Silk, Jonathan Ross and Louis Theroux to England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, boxer Naseem Hamed. Pop artists haven't escaped either and the parodying has included Ronan Keating, Elvis Costello, Bono and the Gallagher brothers, as well as heart-throbs Hugh Grant and Richard E Grant. Even other comedians get the treatment, including Eddie Izzard and Alan Davies and the famous cast of Friends, nor is the EastEnders crew. But the piece de resistance in their repertoire has got to be David and Victoria Beckham! "Yes David!"
How many awards?
Alistair won distinguished comedy awards for his Big Impression series: the Best Comedy Entertainment Award at the British Comedy Awards in 2000, the Best Entertainment Programme at the Broadcast Awards a year later and the Variety Club Comedy Award the year after that.
Sporty too!
Is there no end to this man's talents? Alistair has always been a keen sports fan and has done the voiceover for The Staggering Stories of Ferdinand De Bargos on BBC TWO, as well as The Sports Review of the Year, Match of the Day and Oddballs. He's also released Football Backchat and The Second Leg, both best sellers in the comedy and sports video charts.
Ronni who?
Ronni found her true talent when she worked on a paddle steamer making her customers laugh with impressions of Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, Shirley Temple and Bette Davis. Before long, recognition came with an award as Time Out New Act of the Year. Aside from her continuing partnership with MacGowan, Ronni has appeared in theatres (Miss Conceptions, Mixed Doubles) TV series (Holby City, Rory Bremner Who Else?, The Man from Auntie), movies (The Debt Collector) and Steve Coogan's spoof horror series: Dr Terrible's House of Horrible.
On doing impressions, she says: "I always have to find my take on what drives a person before I feel happy that I can do them properly. You can't improvise on a musical instrument until you've mastered the fundamentals and have something to build on, and it's the same principle with an impression."
