Two things have caught my eye over the past two weeks. The first was Matt Stone and Trey Parker's episode of South Park in which a depiction of Mohammed caused death threats from Islamic extremists causing Comedy Central to pull it from the schedule. The second is this week’s cinema release of Chris Morris’ Four Lions, a satire about four inept Muslim suicide bombers.

At last Ricky Gervais has done it. He's finally made a film that's good. Now I'm a fan of the man's work but let's be honest, before Cemetery Junction his track record on the big screen has been about as good as Tiger Woods' fidelity scorecard. Seems he should stick with Stephen Merchant to rein him in.

Big screen
In the same day I read three articles that made me very cross. Bill Murray was on TV in the states talking about how he's dreading being involved in Ghostbusters 3; they're remaking Oscar winning comedy Arthur with Russell Brand in the Dudley Moore role; and some berk in Hollywood is even reviving the Police Academy franchise.

So this year's Oscars have been announced and the ceremony will be presented by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin - the first time since 1986 there's been more than one host. One's a stand-up comedian turned actor, the other an actor who's currently one of the funniest men on TV thanks to his brilliant turn in 30 Rock. This got me thinking, dear reader, about the relationship that comedy has with Hollywood. To be more specific, comedians who have become successful A List actors and those who have died on their arse.
The death of freedom of speech? Don't be silly
