When another racer clips you - or your talent runs out - it calls for another, much rarer talent to keep man and machine on the tarmac.
Great Motorsport Saves
It's 2009 Nascar down in Talladega and a driver achieves the miraculous to keep it out of the wall, to the delight of the commentators: "Save it, save it, save it, brother save it! He did!"
Shunted into a sideways drift, Jason Plato astonishes everyone by keeping his 2009 Chevy Lacetti touring car on the tarmac and in the race.
Less motorbike racing and more rodeo as the bike vainly attempts to unseat its acrobatic rider. Just incredible.
Motorbike racer Max Biaggi pulls the traditional winner's wheelie but he's seriously misjudged the trajectory. Surely he's not coming back from that...?

After reading this i think that the writer was trying to keep the number 1 spot for himself. This list is laudable!
No Tony Hancock??
Although I do love Paul Merton I can't see how he is number 1?? Surely HRH Stephen Fry is much more talented. Also in my opinion Harry Enfield shouldn't be on it at all!! I would have Dudley Moore and Peter Sellers on there aswell.
Russell Howard and Marcus Brigstocke should be higher they're much better than Russell Brand and i think Robert Webb and Rhod Gilbert should be on this list
Yeah...no sign of Noel Fielding. Where's Julian Barratt also? I don't think Paul Merton should be number one, perhaps Stephen Fry...or even John Cleese. I've just thought about partying with all these guys and girls though...and well...i'm weeing with excitement.

Also, p.s. think there should be a vote for '50 best comedians' as the '50 best wits' didnt work out too well. ;
ok, just no. What about Lee Evans, surey better than all of these. He should be number one. Then Russel Howard, he deserves to be much higher than that. and Michael Mcintyre. What about ryan stiles and colin mochery? Whoever did this is an absolute idiot tbh. Not happy at all :@
oh well... at least most of my favourites are on there somewhere xxx
i think frankie boyle and dara o'brien are much much more wittier than Jeramy Clakson i mean Michael McIntyre is more funnier i dont know who done this least but it is upside down all the good ones are at the end of the lsit and the bad ones and the beging in number 1 place . !!!!! I love Frankie Boyle i think he should be number 1 or at least in top 10
my man frankie boyle should be up the top end of the list. when he is on everything stops in my house.. personally i think he is the funniest (crudist) man on tv at the moment.. definately a select audience with him

Why Russell Brand? Just....why?! He isn't funny!!! At all!!! Stephen K Amos? WHERE IS HE?! Russell Howard should be a bit higher, don't ya think? Michael McIntyre's in a good place (: I am not happy. ¬¬
If it is wit that is being praised then where are Alan Coren, Clive James and surely number one, Peter Ustinov
I think Graeme Garden is missing from the list
I think we can all agree that this is a hell of a difficult list to make, not only is it very subjective but there's also so many witty people to choose from. But I reckon this list is pretty good!
Oh My God! Who judges these things? There is no way that Paul Merton is a better wit than the lovable and incredible Stephen Fry, no offence to Paul even though I find him quite funny.

wer the hell is noel fielding and what is with russell brand being no10 he should be no 2 cos noel fielding is no 1
What's going on? Let's have Oscar first for a start. Spike up, Coward up, Twain up; Adams about tenth. Groucho Marx and Dorothy Parker should be in the Top Ten. Fry's in the right place, Merton third, Mitchell's in the right place, Clarkson about twelth below Jimmy Carr. I also ought to say that wit isn't the same as being a good stand-up Comedian. If this was a list of best comedians it would be very different; personally I would have Dylan Moran at the top for that. Thankyou for reading.
WERE IS LEE MACK HE IS WELL FUNNIER THAN PAUL MERTON AND STEPHAN FRY
Eddie Izzard? How did anyone think that he was not worthy of a place but Simon Amstell was???
I agree. Not having the immortal Spike Lee as #1 is a travesty. Where would comedy be without him breaking out of the mold with the Goon Show?
Displaying 21 to 26 of 39
Surely (Sir) Spike is THE #1.
Top 50 funniest WITS of all time is what the article is about. rik mayall, adrian edmondson are slapstick comedians they are not at all WITTY. who are noel fielding and julian barratt? Again the point that is made about John Cleese is about, again, slapstick, although in general terms John Cleese is witty. Certainly the top 5 are extremely WITTY so well done.
So John Cleese is voted as having the best comedy moment ever (Basil Fawlty attacking his mini with a tree branch, classic) and yet cannot break into the top 10? Nonsense. Stephen Fry up to #1, Simon Amstell & Russell Brand need to be dropped way down (funny, yes, top 10 ever funny? No way), Bill Bailey up. Spike Milligan...20th!?!? He EASILY deserves to be top 5 no contest. Sort it out...Please!
wheres rik mayall, adrian edmondson, noel fielding and julian barratt, four of britains greatest comics?and how the hell did jeremy clarkson beat dara o'brien, catherine tate AND frankie boyle?!?!
Wow! Who the heck are you trying to impress? About 50% of these are "Alternative" crap. Russell is about as funny as roadkill. Stephen Fry is an intelectual giant who is only in there to appease certain quarters. Paul Merton is an acquired taste a bit like chocolate coated wasps. Oh yes we got to have Oscar in. Just to show us peasants your well read I suppose. Wheres the peoples comedians? Dave Allen etc. Hancock & Morecambe. Benny & John are too down market I suppose. Are you sure you heard the question right. The word was Wit! & you gave us Sh**!

What no Bill Hicks ??
where is comedy legend victoria wood?????!!!!!!
Am really disapointed, was hoping for a video countdown...
I don't think Russell Brand should even be on there. I would change the order a bit, couple of people missing, but apart from that, nice list!!! Paul Merton is definitely deserving of that #1.
A good try at a list, but needs a bit more thought. I don't know how you could leave off Eddie Izzard. He is without a doubt one of the top 50, and has a far better wit than say, Ian Hislop for example? Also Harry Hill, as 'skbromley' pointed out above. His stand up is fantastic and he has great wit! I can think of plenty more too. Still... A good try and a good choice for No 1! :O)

Or Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson, they neeeeed to be on here! Total geniouses....
Also, Where's Vic Reeves!?!?
What about Rowan Atkinson, Benny Hill or The Carry On Team. They are a lot funnier then some of the ones on this list Russell Brand for just an example have peoples comedy tastes reduced to almost nothing
Awesome list!! All the right people but it would have been better really if it had been top 75 or somthing but still, awesome! I'm glad Paul's at #1 but i think that Frankie Boyle, Jack Dee, John Cleese and Greg Proops should have been way higher, just behind Paul or at least in the top 15! :D
Interesting choices there... I disagree with a lot of them, like Billy Connolly at number 4, lost respect for his comedy when he went stateside and did. "Head of the Class," I think you missed out on a lot of good American comics, like Jeff Foxworthy for example. Russell Brand please just look at Ponderland his show in Australia , that alone should send him to number 51!

I strongly disagree with the order. The truly great, time tested comic geniuses should be higher up on the list than up-and-comers. And where are Eddie Izzard and Robin Williams?
Awesome! Some of these I might disagree but very glad to see Mr Proops at 17! That's excellent, he's so brilliantly sarcastic :) Good one Dave :)
Just...no. I like a lot of these folk, but where's Eddie Izzard, for example? Harry Hill? And how can you rate emerging comics alongside or higher than grand masters? Sorry, but this is all wrong!
Cool list! Though I think Mihael McIntyre should've been even lower down, if not #1!
