So the results are in and the Aston Martin DBS is wearing the coveted Car of the Year 2008 laurels. It's a good outcome on the whole - a world-beating supercar made by a British company triumphs in the face of stiff global opposition.
The voting patterns made for interesting reading across each of the six categories. The most striking trend was the unerring ability of voters to ignore the cheapest car. The Hyundai i10 in Supermini, the Citroen Berlingo in Family, the Fiat Punto Abarth in Sports, the Seat Altea Freetrack in 4x4, the VW Passat CC in Luxury and the Jaguar XKR-S in Supercar; all finished bottom. Your fantasy finances are obviously still very healthy.
That's not to say all the votes tracked the list price. Far from it. Apart from the Passat, the Luxury category actually inverted the money/popularity formula by dumping the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe in fourth and placing the comparatively humble Jaguar XF on top. We were hoping for some thoughtful voting from the Dave massive, and we got it.
This was seen again in the Sports category, where the more obvious choice of the Porsche 911 came a distant second to the more specialist Mitsubishi Evo. This turbocharged rocketship might be just as talented, but it's no pin-up next to the svelte charms of the Porsche and less informed voters might have marked it down for that.
However the car that came closest to unseating the Aston DBS was the humble Fiat 500. The outright winner was the car that most comprehensively beat its category rivals, which the Aston achieved with 42% of the Supercar vote. The diminutive Fiat dominated the Supermini category, but it's 40.5% share was just not enough to push past the V12 Brit. Third overall, in case you were wondering, was the Audi A4 with 37.5% of the Family vote.
So for two years in a row the winner has been impossibly fast and exclusive, following the Audi R8's victory last year. If any Supermini could have turned the tables it would have been the Fiat 500, but beating a British supercar endorsed by James Bond? You've more chance of seeing 007 given his retirement alarm clock. Find out more about the cars.
