Portchester Castle

The Romans used Portchester as a base to counter babarian sea raiders. It became a Saxon settlement and a castle was built there during the 12th century. The French occupied it in 1215. Richard II rebuilt the castle and Henry V used it to launch his Agincourt campaign in 1415. It was a barracks during the English Civil War and a POW centre during the Napoleonic Wars.
