Brunel's Thames Tunnel

A feat of 19th-century engineering, the Thames Tunnel is now used by the East London tube line.

Why I nominated this site: In 1818, Marc Isambard Brunel patented the tunneling shield. This made it possible to tunnel under the Thames and avoid the problem of quicksand which had foiled previous attempts. Twenty-five years later, the first sub-aqueous tunnel was opened for public use between Rotherhithe and Wapping. Brunel was knighted for his efforts.
