Clifford's Tower
The original castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1068 to suppress the northern uprising. It was the scene of the massacre of the Jews during the York riots.
A second wooden structure was built but was blown down in fierce gale. The stone tower, started in 1245 at the orders of Henry III is unique in England.
