Castell Coch
Why I nominated this site: It's a fine example of an architectural folly, built by William Burgess who rebuilt Cardiff Castle. It is reputed to be a possible venue for Charlotte Church's wedding to Gavin Henson.
Surrounded by dark woodland, Castell Coch (Red Castle) was built in 1890 on the foundations of a medieval castle. It became the country retreat of the 3rd Marquis of Bute, one of the richest men in the world.
Although the exterior of drawbridges and conical towers is architecturally modelled on the original structure, the interiors are evidence of an imagination run wild, crammed with ornate gilding, striking murals and wooden carvings.
