Clifton Suspension Bridge
A Grade 1 listed building, the Clifton Suspension Bridge symbolises British engineering at its most ambitious.
24 year old Isambard Kingdom Brunel won a competition in 1830 to build the bridge. Although work started in 1831 the project came under jeopardy through political and financial difficulties and by 1843 it was abandoned. The bridge was completed in 1864. Designed for light horse drawn traffic the bridge amazingly still meets the demands of 21st century commuter traffic with 11-12,000 motor vehicles crossing it every day! When it was built it was an innovative piece of engineering. Planned and built by Brunel and it is an iconic piece of engineering.
