Kenilworth Castle

Kenilworth was a formidable power base, a massive Norman keep with thick impenetrable walls.

Its origins date back about fifty years after the Norman Conquest when King Henry I gave the royal estate of Stoneleigh to his chamberlain, Geoffrey de Clinton, who built the first castle there. His hard work was in vain - a power struggle between Henry II and his son resulted in Kenilworth being taken by Henry II to defend himself.

In 1253, Henry III granted the castle to Simon De Montfort (his brother-in-law), but this didn't stop the Baron leading a rebellion against the Royals. This led to a civil war and De Montfort's death in 1265 at the Battle of Evesham. His supporters famously defended Kenilworth for nine months - the longest siege in English history - surrendering only when an epidemic disease erupted.

By 1394 the tragic history was forgotten, and a splendid great hall built turning the castle into a palace. Over the next few centuries Kenilworth became the focus of extravagant festivities - check out the elaborate gatehouse and stables that still bear witness to this high point in its history.

Today Kenilworth is a memorable testament to the power of Norman defence and an atmospheric reminder of great leaders, their epic struggles and their passion for the pleasures in life.
