Conwy Castle

Watch Video

Conwy was completed between 1283 and 1289 and played an important part in King Edward I's plan to surround Wales in "an iron ring of castles" to subdue the population.

It was used by Edward I as his base during the Autumn of 1294 when Madog led a rebellion against English rule. At the end of the year, the King was effectively besieged in the fortress due to rising water and a lack of food supplies. With its eight mighty, round towers and 30-foot high curtain wall the castle is an impressive sight. You can explore the towers and climb to the top to see the layout of the castle - the Prison Tower which housed the castle dungeon is particularly eerie.

Another must-see is the remarkably well-preserved Great Hall which contains three fireplaces, one of which is elaborately moulded and dates from the mid-13th century.
