Bodiam Castle

The drastic scenery of Bodiam Castle looks like something out of a movie, and indeed it has featured in several films. It was built in the late 14th century by a veteran of King Edward III's wars with France, when the nobility were looking for comfortable, secure residences that also displayed their wealth and rank. The exterior, with its ramparts rising dramatically above the moat, is virtually complete.

Enough of the interior survives to give an impression of castle life and if you ring in advance you can even try on the armour! Take a walk up the spiral staircases and explore the battlements and towers.

Look out for the impressive gatehouse with the castle's original wooden portcullis. Or simply admire the picturesque scenery and soak up the atmosphere at this impressive landmark.
