Great Britons

Starts weekdays, 9pm (from Monday 6th July)
Throughout the generations Great Britain has always prospered around the world thanks to the great Britons that have become icons of the arts, captains of industry and beacons of culture.

For this landmark series, the public were asked to vote for their greatest Briton of all time, but before then, celebrities and fans presented in-depth profiles of some of the shortlisted greats.

This month on Blighty we look at those profiles and celebrate the lives of our greatest ever citizens.

Jeremy Clarkson presents a personal appreciation of the legendary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel; Andrew Marr looks at the life of the great Charles Darwin; historian Richard Holmes reflects on the impact made by reluctant revolutionary Oliver Cromwell; historian Lucy Moore puts forward her argument as to why she thinks Nelson should be named the greatest Briton; actress Fiona Shaw states the case for Shakespeare; Michael Portillo bigs up Elizabeth I; Tristram Hunt looks at tortured genius Isaac Newton; and Mo Mowlam raises the flag for Winston Churchill.

With a roll call like that it’s no wonder that Britain has led the way in so many fields of art, culture and science.
