Best known for catchy, anarchic pop tunes like Our House and My Girl, Suggs was just 16 when he saw the band perform in a friend's garden and joined them as their new singer.

Suggs's career high came in 1999 when Madness won the prize for Outstanding Song Collection at the Ivor Novello Awards.

He went solo in 1994 and his version of Simon and Garfunkel's Cecilia went straight into the charts at number 4 and sold in excess of 500,000 copies.
