Danny Wallace on museums

The British Museum, the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum are just three of our world-renowned cultural treasure houses and centres of learning. But, says Danny Wallace, they barely scratch the surface of our nation’s rich and varied heritage.

To properly understand what makes Britain great, you need to visit one of the many small, privately-run museums dotted around the country. Taking in some of the lesser-known collections of valuable cultural artefacts, Danny travels to the Lawnmower Museum, The Cuckoo Clock Museum and The Baked Bean Museum.

Each one is a monument to the personal passions, not to mention obsessions, of collectors who have somehow become curators of national treasures which might otherwise have been overlooked and lost forever. All of which, prompts a question: what exactly does it take to create your own museum, and is it something anyone can do? Danny Wallace aims to find out.
