The Britpop Story
Remember the big battle for Number One between Blur and Oasis? Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker upstaging the King of Pop? Tony Blair inviting pop stars to sip champers at No.10? It was all down to the phenomenal rise of Britpop. Yes, something pretty extraordinary happened to British music in the 1990s.
The Britpoppers fought against the rise of grunge to, as Blur put it, "declare war on America" and get back to making music that was unashamedly British. Bring on the Fred Perry T-shirts and lyrics about having woodchip on your walls we say! And it worked. The world went mad for Cool Britannia, our Britpop stars basked in the sun-sheeeee-ine… and the rest, as they say is alternative British rock and pop history.
Blighty has enlisted the help of John Harris to guide you melodically through the story of Britpop, with the help of key players including Noel and Liam Gallagher, Blur’s Graham Coxon and Elastica’s Justine Frischmann - to name just a few.
