Howard's Way

Big Grin Excellent - About time Howard's Way re-surfaced on UKTV. Can't wait to relive that 80's era where shoulder pads and fluffed up hair were 'in'.

Thanks Tarshire. I got my copy of the book yesterday. Sooo excited! It gives background to the locations of HW and the actors, albeit written 20 years ago.

Just got back from honeymoon and like Bamf have saved last few episodes of the last series to get through the post-holiday/honeymoon period. Cry

Catastrophie! I saved my last disc of the very last series (don't you just hate saying that?) until I returned from holiday, a sort of pick me up from holiday blues. I was so desperate to get it out of the case I cracked the disc and it wouldn't play!!!!!!!!!!!! Cry
I ordered the complete series again to watch that last few hours and yesterday my life was complete - worth every penny!

Tarshire, thanks, bought the book - good holiday read!

Hi , fellow Howardites!!

I don't know if you're aware of this , but if you go to AMAZON , and type in "Howards Way" in the drop down books heading. You'll be presented with a list of HW related books.

The one entitled "Howards Way - The Making Of A TV Series" by Gerard Glaister & Ray Evans (Paperback - 6 Oct 1988) - Is the one to go for.

It costs 1p and I think P&P is no more than £3.00. Well when I bought it , the book was 1p and P&P was £2.56!!

It's a great book about the making of the programme. Plenty of photos , both B&W and colour. I think it was originally released in 1988 , just before the transmission of the fourth series.

Well, that's it for me and I can't believe I've watched the last one !

Spoilers ahead so don't read any further if you haven't finished watching yet.

That Abbey Urquhart, what a b itch ! I couldn't remember what she did in the end, but I got a shock when she got on the plane. Poor Leo, lost a child but gained a new girlfriend in Jenny (who looked a bit manly if I'm honest Big Grin )

It was good to see Ken get his own back on Laura though, she certainly deserved it, even better when Orin shafted her aswell brilliant stuff. In all an excellent last series even though it felt a little rushed towards the end to tie up loose ends, but much better than the lack lustre 5th series.

Regards to all.

I'm struggling not to watch any episodes yet because once i watch the first one then i'm not going to be able to stop and all 13 episodes would have been devoured in a week!!
I really am going to pace myself and enjoy every episode, it does make it more fun the fact that i cannot remember what happened in this series so it will be like watching it for the first time Big Grin
I want to get to the end to see how it finishes and they wrap it all up but i don't if you know what i mean. Confused

Oh yes... the time is 10.45pm, the day is Wednesday and I am about to embark in watching the final series.
I'm almost reluctant as I know there will be no other after this last box set. Cry
Sailorboy... have you watched an episode yet? I know what you mean about the cover!
I have a very vague memory that Lyn comes back and married Charles Frere at the end.
Here goes...

Has everybody elses Series 6 arrived now?
It came dropping through my letterbox on Monday morning, i ripped open the packaging to see who was on the front cover for this series. Good ole Ken Masters he keeps coming back for more!! I was also upset to see the sticker on the front saying Final Series, it just reminded me that i've only got 13 more episodes to go before the end Cry

I don't want to read inside the cover to find out what happens in each episode so it doesn't spoil it but i know the temptation is going to get to much!! Confused

Checked out the website for Somerley House, when the web site popped up at a quick glance i thought it was Edward Frere on the main page!!. If i wasn't already married that would be a place for a wedding, very grand, (probably very expensive as well) i wonder if they would open it for the day for the Howards Way enthusiasts.
Been in and pre-ordered Series six only 16 days to go. Big Grin

My young and euro friends don't have a clue what the hell I'm taking when I talk about this show.So I'm taking the noughties into the eighties!

Ah Ha, further investigations hav led me to find a website for Somerley House, which was used for Sir Edwards House.
It is www.somerley.com

According to Major Apple’s locations mentioned earlier in this post, here are some other locations I have been able to “map” for you.

The church Lynn got married in (and Mark Foster got buried !)
50°53'5.64"N 1°18'24.27"W

The Station
50°53'1.85"N 1°18'17.94"W

The Elephant (Mermaid) boatyard
50°52'57.30"N 1°18'18.15"W

According to MikeM, Sir Edwards House is Somerley House in Hampshire, if you search on “Somerley House, Hampshire” a house does pop up, not sure Google Earth has it pinned correctly as slightly below it is a much larger house.

Sorry, not too sure exactly which one is Jacks Cottage, and there are several marinas that could have been leo’s surf shack, if any one has anymore information I will happily drive about and have a little investigation about this or any other local building.
As I said earlier, I was only young when it was initially shown, so can’t remember lots of details!!

This is why i love this message board so much. It goes a few weeks without anything then suddenly somebody new joins in with some more information and then an influx of new postings in a couple of days. Thanks NetleyChris you've given us Howards Way fans more things to look at and enjoy. Big Grin

Looking forward to the next instalments of coordinates. Tongue

Oooh this is fun!
I'm pretty certain this is Polly and Gerry's house:
50°52'58.37"N 1°18'23.56"W

I'm still trying to work out where Jan Howard's house is.

Tongue Thanks NetleyChris......what a way to show people round. I live "up north" and could only imagine the scenery. I envy you being able to live in such a lovely part of the country. It is amazing that such a fantastic programme "Google Earth" is absolutely free. I look forward to more coordinates! All you others get your eyes on Netley's views! Many thanks again.

Here you go Frank and anyone else, if you paste the numbers below in the search bar of google earth it should take you exactly to the buildings. I have only done a couple today, but will list some more later.

Leisure Cruise Building

Jolly Sailor

Big Grin Well now on the 10th page! I keep forlornly checking the drama channel but no sign of a return to air yet. As you probably know, Google Earth has now started rollling out much higher definition mapping for the UK. Just pasting in NetlyChris's Bridge road, Bursledon zing's you down to a very detailed view of the river........looks expensive. C'mon UKTV Drama get this fantastic programme series running again. The sponsors and admen would drool over such a programme following and loyalty as depicted here. Please supply some more address's for us to check out on Google Earth. Cheeky

Hello Sailorboy2, earlier you asked about the location of the leasure cruise building, it is the other side of the bridge to the elephant (mermaid) boat yard on the opposite side of the road.
The road is called Bridge Road, Bursledon. It is still in operation selling power boats today, although no Ken now!!!
I live about 1/2 mile from the area and although I was very young in the 80's I did watch it with Mum and Dad. Now I live in the area I am very interested to know all about it!!

Well, thats series 5 done and dusted. as soon as they mentioned that Tom Howard was overseas preparing to bring a J class back i guessed that was going to be the last time we were going to see this great actor. I cannot remeber what series 6 was like when it was originally aired 20 years ago but i'm guessing because of this great loss there was never going to be any series 7,8 and 9 etc. Cry
I'm looking forward to seeing series 6 but knowing that will be it for Howards Way is very depressing.
I'll just have to wait and see what a whole series without the major character will be like.... Frown

I'm with you Sailorboy2.

I have been watching Series 5 every Wednesday night with a few drinks. One episode turns into 3 and its 3.30am in the morning!

I'm managing to stretch the experience until Series 6 comes out as I always forget what happened in the last episode I watched (alcohol amnesia!) and have to watch it again the next week!

Where's the wine and the remote?! Wink
