I don't think it's actually illegal, but the space should be enclosed, maybe with mdf, hardboard, plywood etc. BUT, I could be wrong.

It is against building regulations to have stairs without banisters - I guess that it's your choice while you are living in the place, the problem will be if you want to sell your place then you will really need to replace them before you sell. No family with children would want to buy a place with unguarded stair space for example! If you build a place, the building inspector will fail it if there are no banisters.

Are you thinking of removing the spindles because you don't like them, or for another reason? And does your staircase open onto a hallway or into a living room?

Looking for modern banisters for staircase in terraced house. Bored of the usual wooden spindles and thought something in glass or steel would look good. Any ideas where I can find something like this?

I just moved into a new house and the banisters are too high, which has enabled me to get my very expensive armoire up to my room. I'd like to know how to remove the banisters and replace them once I get my precious armoire upstairs. Any advice welcome.
