Dear Trevor
I had this problem a short while ago.

The easiest way to explain your situation is this.
You have what's called a 'ring' main which is your electrical circuitry in your house.
Visualise the M25 motorway, then an arterial road. and finally a by-pass road. Do you understand? A spur is an arterial road off your ring main and you can ONLY have so many before it overloads. It's like having one socket and plugging in 10 appliances. Sooner or later it will overload and there's a possibility of fire. If I were you I would get a qualified electrician in, and the best way to find one is to look in Yellow Pages under 'electricians'. On the appropriate page you will find a box which shows 'REGISTERED' electricians. Please ONLY use one of those as to cut corners and do it 'cheaply' could mean your life. It might cost you a bit more but knowing the person is qualified AND registered means the job will be done SAFELY.

I hope this helps - good luck and best wishes.
