hey,

i've just been watching one of those 'home makeover' programs where they compete to see who can add the most value to their house and it got me thinking-

has anybody else decorated their house exactly how THEY want it, regardless of what might make them the most money if they sold it on??

because we've redecorated, and we did it to our own tastes, so happy with it.

so yeah... just thought i'd get some other opinions!

You can decorate your house really with what budget you have available. The most economical way, to me, is fresh paint, modern clean styles, and therefore easier to maintain and keep clean. Minimalist is the way to go I think this day of age. Incorporate a little of your own style with accesories, and try keeping it minimal. Add your own favourite colour, with rugs cushions etc. Making it comfortable for your lifestyle counts a lot too!

Smyth_London, I think it really depends upon when you decide to sell. If you plan on living in the property for a good long while before selling, then you might as well surround yourself in a style that you are happy with and can live with. When you go to sell it, depending upon the style, you may need to rethink some of the more personalised ideas (ie., those that don't necessarily appeal to a wider market) to something that appeals to your target market. If you are decorating a house strictly as an investment opportunity, then you have to take your 'heart' out of the process and appeal to the widest possible bracket - which may seem a bit bland (neutrals is the buzzword after all) but will be more likely to get you the price you are after.

San15, if you've got feature walls in a black/white design, I would keep the other walls in white. Otherwise, you risk taking the focus away from the feature walls and diluting the design. The monochrome look is still quite 'in' so I would keep other colours to a minimum, perhaps just using one accent colour in your accessories if it seems too stark. Otherwise, you can use lots of different textures in black & white in order to keep the look from being too cold and add interest. PS If you have a separate question from the main post, you may want to just start a brand new thread as not only will your question be more likely to get lost, you risk hi-jacking someone else's post Wink
