SS Great Britain
Hailed as a success in technological innovation and design, the SS Great Britain was built in 1843 under the supervision of Isambard Brunel. At the time of her launch she was by far the largest ship in the world, over 100 feet longer than her rivals. On 26 July 1845, the SS Great Britain undertook her maiden voyage to New York, a journey completed in an astonishing 14 days. This momentous occasion marked the birth of international passenger travel and world communications, and is a symbol of ingenuity during the Victorian era. The SS Great Britain proved a faithful servant to her country becoming an emigrant carrier at the height of the Australian gold rush, carrying over 44,000 British troops to and from the Crimean War and finally, during the First World War, replenishing battle cruisers with coal from her hold before the decisive battle of the Falkland Islands in 1914. Today the SS Great Britain has been restored so you can step back in time and experience cruising in the 19th century.
