Avebury
If you're fascinated by Stonehenge, Avebury is a must-see. Covering some 28 acres, the great stone circle at Avebury is so huge it encompasses a large part of the village. The site is enclosed by a ditch and external bank and approached by an avenue of stones.
Within the henge is pre-history's largest stone circle comprised originally of 98 sarsen standing stones, some weighing more than 40 tonnes. Inside the boundaries are another two stone circles, and some believe these were pagan temples.
Astronomical alignments are a common theory to explain the positioning of the stones at Avebury, with the North Circle being centred by a cove whose axis meets the midsummer sunrise. Take a stroll around this sacred site and revel in one of the finest and largest Neolithic monuments in Europe.

Avebury is an amazingly complex and beautiful site. It is hard to imagine just how the people who built it managed to achieve such a place. The henge alone is awe-inspiring when you think that they dug it with antler pics!
The Great Raymondo - Some of the stones were re-erected in the 1930's but that is no different to Stonehenge which also had some stones re-erected at the start of the last century. - Something to say? Add a comment...
