hello amanda, i have a story from ww1 about my great grandfather George marshall. He was born in plumstead east London in about 1878, he enlisted in the Kings own Lancashire regt sometime in 1914, where he served in France. he served at first in a labour battalion, but this troubled him, so he joined a front line battalion, and saw much action throughout France. He always said when told to look after himself, theres not a German alive that can kill me. These proved to be prophetic words, he died of influenza on the 18th november, 1918in a military hospital in Rouen, and is buried at St sever allied cemetary, I visited his grave a couple of years ago, which was quite emmotional for me.
