VOICE OVERS DURING ONLY FOOLS AND HORSES

Thread Starter: ANDREAC4753    Started: Wed 15 Oct 2008    Replies: 25

Mad I was watching the classix xmas clip today and was INFURIATED that a voice over was telling viewers what David Jason ESQ were doing when they were not speaking. EXPLAIN PLEASE. I am assuming it is for visually impaired people- but I personally feel it is maddening.
Also, on another note- at the beginning and end of every programme, do we really need to know that this episode was chosen by GOLD from whatever station it was originally broadcast on? I feel most people will know which station it was originally on or wont really care.
I know i dont.

Angry Angry Angry we were enjoying how VICAR OF DIBLEY was made when 5 mins from the end over a particular piece of info the inevitable "watch this it s on next " voice over.!!!! i've said this before you sometimes miss good dialogue, punch lines, and who dunnits with this irritating habit Mad uktv , you have five minutes of adverts to break into for your voice overs so why not ??it can't be the money aspect from the ads because you keep getting your moneys worth from repeating the same old set of shows! please please have a thought for your viewers and let us see AND HEAR ALL the programme!

My TV evenings are now COMPLETELY RUINED by this irritating and pointless addition to previously wonderful comedy. I shan't bother to watch GOLD anymore because they probably won't take any notice of the annoyance their ill-judged politically correct action has caused. Why do people always have to spoil a good thing!!!!

I mentioned this to the Girlfriend last night on the phone and shes on cable - she didnt have audio description on so I called Sky just now and they said they're 'Aware and working on it as soon as possible' - gratuities for my detective work are accepted in cold hard cash Big Grin

Thank goodness I am not alone in my thoughts on this infuriating situation- maybe the powers that be think we are stupid, and that is why they are doing it.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes the "powers that be" to respond to our plight- bet they do SWEET BOG ALL about it, and continue to do it. If that is the case well,I for one wont be watching!!!!!!!!
Look forward to a prompt reply from the bosses NOT!!!!!!!

what the is with the ad over our programmes, now no dis-respect but if the vision impaired have trouble with the programmes the service provider technicains would set it up for them, we don't need it dumped in our laps.

please sort it out you are ruining some good programmes by having voice overs that you can't choose to switch on or off as it is anoying.

I fully agree with all of the comments made. This service should be selected if needed - NOT deselected if not needed. It may be a useful service to some people, however, I'm afraid I find it extremely annoying. If the voiceover does not get switched off, then any UKTV station running the voiceovers will get switched off on my TV. Let's hope it is just either an evening of testing? or that some numpty has flicked a switch somewhere and they haven't realised yet?? My apologies if I sound like I'm ranting.

I have only just noticed this happening this evening and i went into the digibox menu thinking that the kids had been messing with it only to find that it was off, Is this voice over 24hr or just in the evenings as some channels do? It's very annoying that they ruin this channel already without adding the voice over that you can't switch off!!

First of all, to the original poster as I was confused when I turned over to Red Dwarf on Channel Dave to find out the voiceovers (or Audio Description) was being played over and yet I couldn't turn it off (not by the help button stating it as unavailable and my box systems state it as off). Same with Watch and G.O.L.D. I truely thought it was happening to both sets in my house but seeing as others are having the same problem.

As, for me anyway, this is the first time, the channels have ever done this and as Alibi, Watch, G.O.L.D are part of the UKTV network, maybe it is a fault on their end and maybe it'll be fixed shortly.

Hopefully.....

Im not blind or deaf nor have I lost my sense of smell so I don't expect the original casts to pop round to my gaff and perform live so I can get a whiff of Del Boy's 'Hai Karate' So why oh why oh WHY am I forced to listen to some numpty whittering on about 'so and so is walking up the hill' I KNOW - I appreciate that partially sighted folk may want to know BUT THEY HAVE THE CHOICE TO DECIDE. You know those pointy plastic things with buttons on?? They CONTROL a TV's output - so quit the Orwellian control of my TV or I and my like-minded comrades here will star controlling your output....and walk!

Angry I am furious about these excessive voice overs. I turned over from Channel 4 to watch the Vicar Of Dibley/ Only Fools and Horses and found to my anger that there was a frequent interuption during both programs to state the most pointless of things. For example on Only Fools, Rodney entered the room and the annoying voice over immediatley kicked in stating "Rodney enters the room wearing a suit". WHY? One of the reasons I got Sky in the first place was UK Gold and now they've wrecked quality programming with un-nessasary voice overs. As others have said there is the option to turn audio descriptions on for the visually impared, however it has to be optional. If it gets much worse I simply WILL not watch any UK channel. SORT THIS OUT, ITS DESTROYING CLASSIC PROGRAMMING!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Folks - try watching comedy 2 - there's no garbage running over the programmes on there - YET - but give them time - GOLD might get in there too.

LornaB34133

You know what! I have just had a look at the listings on this site and the whole stupid lot has gone down the pan! If the visually impaired want to listen to the descriptions they can turn them on, same as hard of hearing can turn on subtitles - even though many of them have English as thier 2nd language and may not be able to read in English - hey - great idea for you - why not put your resources into making that service better instead of driving the majority away from your channels by denying us freedom of choice! I'm not an unreasonable person, as an ex teacher of the deaf I do empathise with these issues, and my late Mother was blind but thankfully she still had her facilties about her to understand the gist of the programme without a numpty telling her - so go on, do yourself and us a favour - SORT IT OUT NOW PLEASE!

Confused is there any way that these irritating voice-overs can be blocked as i shall not be watching the channels that are doing it unless i can remove them! subtitles can be chosen if required but we are all having to put up with this irritation whether we want it or not

What the heck is that bloke talking incessently over our favourite television programmes for? When I tried to turn him off, the tv's settings said that the voiceover was unavailable! Do I need my ears cleaning out? No, wait a minute - If I bung them with cottonwool it will drown him out - naw, better idea - DO NOT WATCH GOLD!!! Angry

The voice overs are destroying the programs, not only on GOLD but also on Alibi. I'm sorely disappointed with such a retrograde step, we might as well go back to steam radio. 10/10 for being ultra PC, 0/10 for pleasing viewers.
